Just a guess — but my money’s on SOME IDIOT DEPRESSED THE TRIGGER OF A LOADED RIFLE WHILE PLAYING WITH IT IN A GODDAMN APARTMENT.
Again, that’s just a guess.

The “victim” of the horseplay was a woman, and she was shot in the butt. One has to ponder about what sort of “goofing around” with a rifle the friends were engaged in.
