TIME: Will Georgia kill an innocent man?

July 16, 2007 at 10:07 am by Andisheh Nouraee in News

Time magazine has a story about Troy Davis, who is scheduled to be killed Tuesday for the 1989 murder of an off-duty police officer in Savannah.

Seven of the nine main witnesses whose testimony led to his conviction have since recanted. The murder weapon has never been found, and there is no physical evidence linking the crime to Davis, who has asserted his innocence throughout.

A final clemency meeting is scheduled for today. U.S. Rep. John Lewis is expected to speak at the hearing on Davis’ behalf. Atlanta Progressive News has been following Davis’ case closely. And over the weekend, the AJC spoke to some of the witnesses involved in the case.

“They told me they could lock me up for withholding evidence,” [Jeffrey] Sapp says, sitting in the same living room in which he was questioned. “I got tired of it. So I told them Troy confessed to me. None of it was true.
