ATLANTA –Georgia Republican leaders are asking for a sweeping audit of the state Department of Transportation with an eye toward using the results to craft transportation legislation next year.

Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and House Speaker Glenn Richardson made the request in a letter to State Auditor Russell Hinton. The letter was obtained by The Associated Press.

John Abbey, director of performance audit operations for the state Department of Audits and Accounts, confirmed Wednesday that a review was under way. Initial results could be available by November, giving state lawmakers time to review them before the start of the next legislative session in January.
