Eddie Long angling for MLK mantle?
August 8, 2007 at 11:24 am by Scott Henry in NewsEddie Long, the self-proclaimed “bishop” of the 25,000-member New Birth Missionary Baptist megachurch in Lithonia, has the largest congregation in Georgia. He’s also got a $350,000 Bentley; a 20-acre, $1.4-million estate; and a heavenly bank balance.
But it appears he also wants to be the spiritual kingpin of metro Atlanta. Last year, he officiated at the funeral of Coretta Scott King and, just this week, the DeKalb County School System used his church as its official meeting hall for teachers — a controversial choice given Long’s long history of anti-gay sermonizing.
Now, Long, a proponent of the gospel of prosperity who puts his followers’ money where his mouth is, is gearing up for a blowout gala Aug. 17 to celebrate his 20 years at the helm of New Birth. We’re guessing the guest list of 1,200 for the black-tie affair at the Georgia World Congress Center doesn’t include many of the poor and needy types mentioned in the New Testament.
It does, however, include a roster of movers and shakers, most prominently Mayor Shirley Franklin and former U.N. Ambassador Andrew Young. A highlight of the event will be a “special presentation” by MLK’s youngest daughter, Bernice King, purportedly on behalf of her late mother. It seems to us that Long is hoping to claim the spiritual mantle of the slain Civil Rights leader. Will Atlanta let him succeed?

Greetings. Very Familar article from anyone who doesnt know Kingdom and have any clue on what we are here for. Let me just start off by saying there is only one Martin Luther King and there will only be one Bishop Eddie L. Long. In no way shape or form do I believe Eddie Long is trying to even walk in the shoes of Martin. Both are great leaders from two different eras. What gets me is when it comes to Gods people, people have the mindset that Pastors or people of God shouldnt be wealthy and own anything. These type of comments come from people who apparently never read Genesis that plainy states to have dominion and rule. How can we do that being poor? Secondly to point out Eddie Longs income and what he owns and not talk about the tremendous things he has done for the city of Atlanta is ridiculous. When you have a heart to give and bless others people will do more to bless you back on top of that GOD rewards you the most. News Flash ,.. Eddie Long isnt on Salary.He has people he has carried for 20 years that love him enough that after all he has done he will be taken care of by people that sit in the pews and those internationally that watch him online. Even those outside the church buiiding. The backwards menatlity people of people is when you say its okay for Jay -z or 50 cent to have Bentleys and arces of land when all they do is curse you out for 60 minutes on an album degrade women and barely want to give back to a community. But its wrong for a Man of God to be taken care of By his people and others when he sacrifices his life to see Gods Mandate to change a city and a nation not to mention he would give you the shirt off his back. Finally I believe for people to understand God and his plan for mankind and for people who write articles like this is that The old mentality of Traditonal church is over. God is raising up people like Long, and other Men of God and leaders to lead the nation and this world into kingdom order. God has a kingdom and none of his people are poor mentally or financially or spiritually poor. The body of Christ are to be the example to creation of christ on earth not beggers and in the back. See the heart of this man and dont Judge because to dont understand. Work on your own personal relationship with christ so you dont have to hate on what you are trying to gain through religion. Seek ye FIRST the Kingdom of God… Then all these THINGS WILL BE ADDED UNTO YOU.

Only know-it-alls will attack Bishop Eddie Long, ungodly snake serpent know-it-alls. Martin Luther King is probably looking down on Bishop Long and smiling. God bless Bishop Eddie Long!

Ramiya, You Hit it right on the head of the nail with your comment. To those who may read this in the future, Mother King was a member of Newbirth and further more she and her children all laid hands or anointed him with the Manlt already a couple of years ago in 2000. Secondly, is it me, but why are all the BLACK men of God being attacked for speaking Life into people and being an example of how a real black man is supposed to talk, walk, dress, and carry himself. If being a liral newspaper and you realy do care about our comunity these are the exsample of the Black men we need to see in our community and not T. I, not J.Z. or all those who perpetuate a lifstyle that most blck men will never see but will do anything to obtain. Why is it that you dont want to see us prosper. Is it that you are really scared of Black america realizing our full potential? If we did what would you do then? I remeber a story in the bible that goes like this. There came into power King who did not know Joseph so he made all the Isrealites slaves and when they were growing to numerous this egyptian King made the decree to have every male child killed at birth. One such child was not killed but was put into a basket into the river Nile where it made its way to The king’s palace only to be brout up as an egyptian Prince. This prince we know as Moses would eventually lead 2 million Isrealites out of captivity but it says that when the came out of captivity they plundered the land of egypt of its Gold and wealth. Stop down playing our Moses’s Like MArtin King, Bishop Eddie Long, T.D Jakes, Creflo Dollar and the likes Beacouse we will rise up and plunder the wealth of the America’s.

Get a clue, people. This man is fleecing you in order to sport his tailor made suits and spew his venom on you every week. There is no Holy Spirit in his church and I feel sorry for everyone who follows him like a sad little lamb to the slaughter. Beware of false prophets…..the designer suit is your first hint.

It is amazing to me how gullible congregations are. We are surely living in the last days. Self proclaim Bishops, gread, avarice, opulent living, while many of their congregants struggle to live day to day. Their ministeries are centered around greed, pure greed. May God help us in these last days, as we see APOSTASY ENVELOPE the Christian church by phony imposters, who were not call by the Holy Spirit but called themselves. “Many are called but few choosen..”

Geeezzzzz…. let’s just say, I wish I could find 25,000+ gullible people with apparent low self esteem, who obviously thinks that “doing the right thing” means worshiping a leach that’s willing to tell them anything while continuing to dig deep into their pockets in the “Name of the Lord”, and not breaking UNCLE SAM off any (NO TAXES)!
However, in the defense of these ministers is it really their fault that these people exist and are willing to literally throw money at them when ever they ask….some people are just , how can I say this and not sound mean…..IDIOTS!
After all, we all know somehow Jim Jones managed to convince hundreds of people to take/drink poison and lie down and die… but, today’s ministers (not all, but, some) would rather their congregation stay alive and well, so they can continue their current LIFESTYLE…yeah, they may throw them a BONE every now and then, by offering to pay their rent or mortgage for a month, give them a gas card or two every now and then, make a car payment, or utility payment all nice but small gestures (especially considering how much $$$ the church brings in)…. all in “the name of the Lord”.
Unfortunately, just because these people are looking for a place to belong, something or someone to believe in and want to do the “right thing†spiritually and morally doesn’t mean these ministers should take advantage of them….and it doesn’t help when some of these idiosyncrasies and sometimes indiscretions are brought to the forefront and the congregation says in unison… “He’s only human…..and we all make mistakes” ;-(
Now turn to your neighbor and say, neighbor…I don’t have any more $$$ to give…..AMEN!

Jim Jones didn’t convince all of those people to drink poison. He had armed guards forcing them to drink that stuff. If you are going to quote history get it right.
I am sick and tired of these prosperity preachers. God is not just about prosperity. And the prosperity that they are speaking about is just monetary. You never hear about these preachers talk about healing. In these hard economic times that we are living in how many of them have passed out blessings to people. Or asked the people in their flock what they need?
It is time for the flock to wake up and stop letting these men lead you to hell. They are false prophets and they are not teaching God’s word. They are twisiting the scripture around which is the same thing Satan did to Eve in the garden and he tried to do to Jesus on the mountaing. Stop being gullable and wake up.
