The project is the school’s first entry in the Solar Decathlon, an annual contest held by the U.S. Energy Department to pit green-minded students against one another in a contest to see who can build the most energy-efficient living space. Tech’s remarkable design focuses on darkness and light, allowing the sun to both naturally illuminate daytime areas and charge solar panels over the bedroom. The project’s budget: $700,000, although students quoted in That Other Paper’s article said a prototype could be built for $280,000.
This caught my eye in the TOP article …
The lead sponsor is Beazer Homes, and there is broad support for the project throughout Georgia Tech, with four of the school’s colleges, three research centers, and numerous faculty members acting as managers or advisers.
Yeah. Can we build those houses pronto, kids, and see a little return on investment?

It’s too bad Beazer’s problems cast a wee bit of a shadow on this really cool project. At least, Beazer helped fund the thing.

we did all this stuff with polyethelene and earth houses back in the 70’s.
