Wikipedians choose Egypt over Atlanta for annual convention
November 12, 2007 at 10:57 am by Thomas Wheatley in NewsFirst we lose the NASCAR Hall of Fame to Charlotte, now we’ve lost the Wikipedia convention to Egypt. Technology industry blog Valleywag reports that Atlanta was in the running to host next year’s Wikimania, a ribald and hedonistic orgy of free-info maniacs, but lost out to Alexandria, Egypt. Volunteer committees in different competing cities created bid pages on Wikimedia to argue their case — go here to check out Atlanta’s.
I’m sure there’s a putt-putt course somewhere in the metro area that boasts a fine replica of the sphinx and the pyramids. We’ve got plenty of libraries. Who knows where we went wrong.
But it’s your loss, you foot soldiers of the information revolution. Egypt sure as hell doesn’t have this.

How about we go into Wikipedia and change Wikimania’s entry to say the meeting is in Atlanta?

Done.
But it’s already been changed. Those kids are rapido.

That’s a nice shot of the Atlanta skyline in the bid. It’s tough to get a shot like that without it being dominated by a giant highway.
