Every Georgian has a stake in the revitalization of Jekyll Island. Established by law in 1950 as a State Park for the people of Georgia, this magnificent barrier island has been prized by generations for its natural beauty and serene ambiance. Today, Jekyll Island faces a redevelopment plan that will significantly alter its character and accessibility. On January 31, the Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island will host a Town Hall Meeting on the Future of Jekyll Island State Park. The event will be held from 7 to 9 PM at the Maloof Auditorium, 1300 Commerce Drive, Decatur, Georgia 30030. The purpose of the event is to raise public awareness concerning the planned revitalization of Jekyll Island. The format will be a panel discussion consisting of legislators, environmentalists, educators, and public advocates, who will examine the proposed redevelopment of Jekyll Island from diverse perspectives and invite questions from the audience. The Initiative to Protect Jekyll Island is a non-profit corporation registered with the State of Georgia. Established in 2006, IPJI is a grassroots association of more than 6,000 of the park’s visitors from across the state of Georgia and beyond, committed to the cause of making the will of the people heard in the public debate over the redevelopment and further development of what many consider to be one of the state’s most unique treasures.

Obama was at the Harvest Cathedral in Macon yesterday. Rumor has it he will reconfirm his Christian vows with an Immersion Christening on Jekyll. Thanks to the “Initiative” for protecting this holy ground.

For some reason, Flannery O’connor quotes have been popping up on all the blogs this morning. I have two large rocks at the entrance of my home, one is shale from FO’s homeplace in Milledgeville - Andalusia, the other is sandstone from Cassandra and Pat Conroy’s home in South Carolina. If they come up missing, while i go out for some grits, i’ll know who the ordinary and usual suspects are. Enjoy this piece of bedrock from FO’s short story, “The Comforts of Home.”

“Thomas does not hate you.” His mother said. “We are not the kind of people who hate,” she added, as if this were an imperfection that had been bred out of them generations ago.”
