Columbus, Ga. more family friendly than Chuck E. Cheese!
May 22, 2008 at 3:14 pm by Thomas Wheatley in NewsBest Life, the glossy Bible for handsome middle-aged men who like to do crunches in the shower, ranked the top 100 U.S. cities based on how conducive they are to successfully raising a family. Honolulu is the best, Clarkesville, Tenn., is the worst. Atlanta, somewhat unsurprisingly, ranked no. 61.
But that’s not the news. Guess what Georgia city is the fourth best place in the country to raise your brood?

Yip…wha? Nothing against you, Columbus, but…huh? What am I missing?
Here’s what they based the list on:
But fathers face reality when they’re not in prime time. They want to raise their children somewhere safe, where they can attend good schools with favorable student-teacher ratios, above-average test scores, and respectable budgets. Plenty of museums, parks, and pediatricians also contribute to a good quality of life, whereas multihour commutes, expensive houses, and divorcing friends and neighbors do not. Best Life editors used these categories and data from the U.S. Census Bureau, National Center for Education Statistics, FBI, American Association of Museums, National Center for Health Statistics, and American Bar Association to evaluate 257 cities.

How about being proud that a city in GA made the top 10.

No, but seriously…
My hometown…it’s a shithole; always has been, always will be. Huge army base, cotton mills, crooked cops, how can you miss? In the 70’s we had the highest per capita murder rate once. There’s hometown pride and then there’s…a sense of odd, unreality.

Kathy,
I’m also from the lost valley. I guess you haven’t been gone long enough, you still have a splinter up your crotch about the town. Yeah, it has what it has and not much more, but you miss the point, that people long for exactly what you despise. When you grow up you’ll understand.
Just remember, the shithole you recall is the one in your head, the one you carry with you, wherever you go, until you decide to shirk it. How’s that smell to ya now? And by the way, where, to you, is the opposite of Columbus? Jus curious… :-)
