Roxie,

The best group to check out is Citizens for Progressive Transit, the organization that helped create the A-TRAIN trip planner. Here's their website:

Yep, we're talking hybrids, Dale, but I'm just throwing you out different ideas. Feast upon the knowledge, my good man!

Electric cars interest me, but we are discussing hybrids, right?

What happens if say half the cars in America are electric and the corresponding rise in electricity demand, pollution from electrical plants, rising cost of electricity due to increased demand for finite resources, etc.

Consider the increase in junked hybrids as they penetrate the market further.

A 150,000 mile life span is a joke these days. Short life span = larger carbon footprint due to the resources needed to build more new cars at an increased tempo of replacement.

I am all for new-tech in cars and I consider the Prius a pioneer and a stepping stone to a true replacement technology. I did get a kick out of one website estimating that hydrogen powered vehicles are at least 10 years out. I guess thye haven't seen the city busses and the BMW 750 with hydrogen cells.

Same thing happened in the 70's with all the major oil companies. They started buying the stations back in the 80's because the independent couldn't afford to replace their underground tanks with the new construction.

How much will it cost to replace the hybrid's batteries at about 150,000 miles? They are only designed for 100 - 200k miles. How much gas could you buy for that amount of money? How about all that environmentally damaging mining that is rewuired to build the batteries?

Do the math, a Corolla or Civic is better for the environment and for your pocketbook.

Speaking of Exxon, I hear they're going to sell off (or shutter) their entire retail business in the US.
