DOT road work from Hell happening again

July 18, 2008 at 2:45 pm by Thomas Wheatley in News

As is the custom on Fridays here, we remind you that the DOT will resume its weekend resurfacing project on I-75/85 between 10th Street and University Avenue. This weekend the agency will close several northbound and southbound lanes, as well as exits in between. If it rains, we’re granted a reprieve, but that’ll be another weekend in the future this goes down. A full list of the exits and specific details about the project are available after the jump.

If you can, use transit to travel this weekend. Idling on the asphalt wasteland wastes gas, burns up money, and pumps disgusting bits of nasty into the air.

If you decide to brave the roads, please use caution.

WHAT: Resurfacing the Downtown Connector (4.79 miles) between University Avenue and 10th Street.
WHEN: 9 p.m., Friday, July 19, continuously through the weekend until 5 a.m., Monday, July 21.
WHERE:

Southbound:
- The HOV lane from I-75 southbound to the merge onto the Connector will be closed.
- Three inside (left) lanes of I-85 southbound starting under the Peachtree Street overpass will be closed.
- Starting where I-85 southbound merges with I-75 southbound the four inside (left) lanes (including HOV lane) will remain closed to I-20.

The following Southbound HOV Only ramps will be closed to ALL traffic:
- Spring Street off-ramp
- Piedmont Avenue/Harris Street

The three southbound outside lanes will remain open

Northbound:
- Starting at the Edgewood Avenue overpass on I-75/I-85 northbound three outside (right) lanes will be closed to just north of 10th Street. The Edgewood Avenue on-ramp will be open for motorists traveling to Downtown Atlanta venues.

The following Northbound ramps will be closed to ALL traffic:

- Freedom Parkway on-ramp
- Freedom Parkway off-ramp
- JW Dobbs Avenue on-ramp
- Pine Street/Peachtree Street off-ramp
- Spring Street on-ramp
- Spring Street off-ramp
- 10th Street off-ramp

The three northbound inside lanes (including HOV) will remain open.

I-20:
- Starting early Saturday morning the northbound ramp from I-20 to I-75/I-85 northbound will be reduced to one lane. This closure will be removed as soon as possible Saturday evening.

These closures are necessary for crews to continue resurfacing the Downtown Connector. During the weekend crews expect to lay more than 12,000 tons of asphalt brought by more than 400 dump trucks. There will be more than 250 workers within the work zone.

The closures are expected to cause significant delays on I-75/85 at the I-20 interchange as well as delays on I-20 in the immediate vicinity of the interchange. Georgia DOT advises motorists to utilize I-285 to avoid backups. The Atlanta Braves are playing at home this weekend.

Subject to change for weather conditions.
