Obama made us lose, says Jones op
August 8, 2008 at 3:03 pm by Scott Henry in NewsMatt Towery of InsiderAdvantage is convinced that operatives with the Obama presidential campaign helped scuttle Vernon Jones’ Senate bid by sending out mailers that focused on Jones’ boasts that he voted twice for George W. Bush. The rumor has been picked up by Political Insider, Peach Pundit and other local blogs.
A certain Kenneth Walker, a Jones strategist, claims that he knows “for a fact…that there was a meeting in Sen. Harry Reid’s office with David Axelrod from Obama’s campaign, and there was an agreement Obama’s campaign would help Jim Martin with the direct mail linking Vernon and George Bush.”
That’s strange. We thought Vernon and Barrack were supposed to be tight.
First off, Martin stomped Jones by a 50% margin – and nearly as much in Mr. CEO’s home county of DeKalb. How much of that landslide could realistically be attributed to a couple of fliers?
Anyway, we called a highly placed Obama strategist who called the rumor ridiculous. Balderdash. Poppycock. In addition, he said, it isn’t true.
But even if Obama had tried to influence the outcome of the Georgia Senate race to ensure that the winner is someone whose squeaky-clean reputation better complements his own, what could Jones’ camp hope to achieve by smearing its party’s own presidential candidate?
One of Jones’ main points of attack during the primary campaign was that Martin had voted for John Edwards instead of Obama on Super Tuesday. So now Jones – or at least his proxy – is trying to make the Democratic presidential almost-nominee look like a scheming scumbag? Is Jones really so narcissistic that he hopes to take a man who could be the first African American Commander in Chief down with him simply out of spite?
Help me out. I’m trying to understand this.

Vernon lost because 1) he was not the best candidate, 2) he’s a polarizing person, 3) his record is not “scrupilously clean,” and 4) he failed to mobilize voters for the run-off. Too bad he chose to play “the victim”. Good riddence.

Vernon’s said he voted for Bush 2 times. Vernon says he’s a conservative. So of course he wants to take down the democratic candidate because he’s really a Republican.
Its not the first time a Republican ran as a Democrat in DeKalb to win an election. Latest example being State Rep Mike Jacobs.

WTF is up with Matt Towery? I though I saw a comment by him the night of the run-off saying that Jones’ defeat was bad news for Obama in Georgia - apparently only because the two candidates are black. Uh news flash Towery - the real Democrats voted for Martin.
