Relief from gas pain?

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Here’s a welcome sight — a gas station with gas, but no lines.

A return to normal?

I hope this means the gas shortage is easing.

Author Diane Wilson discusses new book Holy Roller tonight

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Billed as “a childhood memoir,” the complete title of Wilson’s novel is Holy Roller: Growing up in the Church of Knock Down, Drag Out; or, How I Quit Loving a Blue-Eyed Jesus. Phew. That’s almost as tricky to say/type as it is for a 9-year-old to sit still in church while the preacher hollers fire and brimstone.

Or so I gather from Wilson’s story. She was raised a Rapture-fearin’ Pentecostal, while I grew up in the Cult of Mary (aka Catholicism). Wilson’s 9- to 10-year-old self chatterboxes through her childhood narrative, sometimes meandering into stream-of-conscious monologues, but always capturing the guilt-inducing push and pull between curiosity and indoctrination.

But being an author is more of a side project for Wilson, a fourth-generation Texas fisher(wo)man and co-founder of Code Pink who’s made headlines as an environmental activist keen on hunger strikes and nonviolent disobedience (she’s been arrested around 29 times). She also inspired the award-winning documentary Texas Gold, which screens periodically on the Sundance channel.

Wilson appears tonight, Tues., Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Existentialist Congregation of Atlanta, 470 Candler Park Drive. 404-378-5570. www.acappellabooks.com. Georgia for Democracy, the Atlanta chapter of WAND and A Cappella Books are sponsoring the event.

The Blotter

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

THE INCARCERATION OF MIMI: Police got a tip that a woman with the street name “Mimi” might be selling drugs from a motel room on Metropolitan Parkway. So police went to the motel room and knocked on the door. A woman opened the door, and she was holding a suspected crack pipe in one hand and a vibrator in the other hand, an officer noted. The woman “was naked except for a bra.” The officer asked if she was Mimi and she said yes. The officer asked her to hand over the suspected crack pipe. Apparently, Mimi tried to slam the door, but the officer stuck his foot in the door before it closed. After police searched the motel room, Mimi allegedly admitted she had bought $100 worth of crack earlier that day and sold some of it because she ran out of money. According to the police report, Mimi is a 31-year-old prostitute with a scar on her forehead. She was arrested for drug possession.

Hollis heads to Atlanta Magazine

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008
Hollis was here.

Hollis was here.

So I’m telling the staff yesterday about our parent company filing for bankruptcy protection, and all of a sudden Hollis Gillespie is knocking frantically on the sliding glass door to the conference room.

She’s carrying a box full of MoonPies. Grant Henry aka Sister Louisa is behind her wearing a baseball cap with a picture of himself on it wearing a baseball cap with a picture of himself on it wearing a baseball cap with a picture of himself, and so on. He looks a bit embarrassed.

Hollis doesn’t look embarrassed at all. I sort of stare blankly at her and then back at the staff — to whom I’ve just unloaded the news from the corporate guys down in Tampa — and then back to her, beginning to shake my hea … no, now’s not the time … no … but she barges in anyway and says: “Hey, it’s been a great run. But I’m leaving you. I know you guys need the money, and I’m expensive, and I got the back page column at Atlanta Magazine. And, hey, anyway, I’ve got MoonPies.” Or something like that. (more…)

Poll: Martin now two points behind Chambliss

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Andre Walker at Georgia Politics Unfiltered points us to a WMAZ (Macon) poll conducted by SurveyUSA that says U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss now leads Democratic nominee Jim Martin by just two points.

This latest poll seems to confirm the numbers released by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) yesterday that showed Chambliss leading Martin by just three points [Source: Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, "New Georgia Poll Shows Martin Within Three Points Of Chambliss", September 29, 2008].

U.S. Senate - Georgia

Saxby Chambliss (R) - 46%
Jim Martin (D) - 44%
Allen Buckley (L) - 5%
Undecided - 5%

You were in line behind me waiting for gas. You looked amazing in your black BMW. If you noticed me…and you see this. lets talk. Maybe we can get some gas together sometimes

Have any of you made new friends as a result of the gas shortage?

Today’s headlines today!

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

STOCK MARKET FRESH: Atlanta-based Arby’s completed a $2.2 billion buyout of fellow fast-foodies Wendy’s yesterday. The new company, Wendy’s/Arby’s Group, expects to add up to 100 new positions at its Atlanta headquarters.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, CEO Roland Smith says Wendy’s/Arby’s will focus on wooing older customers. Perhaps not coincidentally, stock in the company that makes Lipitor is up this morning.

FRESH START: Yesterday, the parent company of this blog filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, as well as lawsuits against three of its creditors for refusing to renegotiate the terms of the company’s loans.

CEO Ben Eason says the bankruptcy filing is not bad news, but instead characterizes the move as an opportunity to restructure the company’s debt under more favorable terms and make what he calls a fresh start.

A RAFT OF THEFTS: Georgia is reportedly the nation’s boat theft capital. I’m sure it sucks to have your boat stolen, but I’m having a hard time getting worked up about it.

BEAT IT: Former Blink182 drummer Travis Barker was released from an Augusta hospital yesterday. Barker was severely burned when the small plane he was traveling on crashed in South Carolina on September 19. Four people were killed in the accident.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY: For Many Americans, Fear and Distrust Run High

Player’s Club: Rock Band 2 for XBOX reviewed

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Rock Band 2
Available now for the XBOX 360; in November for the PS3, Wii and PS2
Designed by Harmonix
Published by Electronic Arts/MTV Games

It’s been less than a year since Rock Band debuted and immediately made its precursor and chief competitor, Guitar Hero, irrelevant. Developer Harmonix, who created both games, consistently referred to Rock Band as a platform more than a game, seemingly precluding the endless series of ever-diminishing sequels that plague the video game industry. Still, it’s not at all surprising to see Rock Band 2 arrive so soon after the original. No entertainment industry is as crazed about sequels and name recognition as this one, and Rock Band’s publisher, Electronic Arts, is one of the worst offenders. There’ve been enough Madden Footballs to choke Madden himself, even though the annual installments’ chief selling point, updated rosters, could easily be released as downloadable content. With video games, if something sells, it will be repackaged, remade, and retailed at full price; so, Rock Band 2 was inevitable.

It’d be easy (and not entirely inaccurate) to dismiss Rock Band 2 as an expansion pack. The core game play is identical to the original. You’ll still be covering various rock hits of the last four decades on chintzy, space-wasting plastic instruments, while playing through a tour mode full of tongue-in-cheek humor. (more…)

Poll: Martin within three points of Chambliss

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss now holds only a three point lead over Democratic nominee Jim Martin, a new poll commissioned by the Mellman Group finds. The poll of 600 likely voters conducted Sept. 24-28 shows Chambliss with a 37-34 lead over the former state lawmaker. Libertarian nominee Allen Buckley received three percent.

From the Martin campaign:

The new numbers show that Chambliss is more vulnerable than ever, despite a month’s worth of television ads from his campaign. Only 27% of Georgia voters now think that Chambliss is doing a “good” or “excellent” job in the Senate, down from 37% in a previous Mellman Group poll in August.

“Saxby Chambliss has been on TV since late August, but it’s clear now that the voters aren’t buying what he’s selling,” Martin campaign manager Ellery Gould said. “Maybe that’s because he’s been telling Georgians that ‘the American Dream is more possible today than ever before.’ Meanwhile, the middle class is struggling and we’re getting stuck with one last bill for the failures of Bush/Saxby Economics: a $700 billion bailout because of the deregulation of Wall Street that Chambliss supported in Washington.”

It should be noted that this poll was commissioned by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. But anytime an incumbent is under 40 percent in the polls, that’s cause for concern. A mid-September Rasmussen poll found Chambliss maintained a seven-point lead over Martin for two consecutive months.
