Open drug markets?

September 4, 2008 at 2:55 pm by Andisheh Nouraee in News

180px-crack_street_dosage.jpgDo you know of, live near, drive-by, any illegal drug markets?

Off the top of my head, I can think of two street corners in Atlanta where people openly sell illegal drugs.

What are some others?

I’m not hankering for crank. I’m working on a story.

Which corners do you have in mind?

  2. Andisheh Nouraee Says:

Sylvan Road and Dill Avenue (not too far from your neck of the woods)

And another in Vine City I can if I’m driving, but don’t know the street names off the top of my head.

I showed you, now you show me.

Just ride the train from 5 points to the airport and back a couple of times. Wear sunglasses and ipod, but as you run parallel to Main Street you’ll see open parking lots and abandoned little giants.
Also, by car, Lee St and Oak St intersection? That whole Whitehall Murphy underpass place? The overpass just N of there is supposedly a street prostitution spot.
Gosh, I’m just a regular font of knowledge aren’t I?

  4. Andisheh Nouraee Says:

Do you mean Main Street down in East Point/College Park?

Also, if I wear a fake mustache along with the shades and iPod, will that work, too?

  5. jeannie Says:

Maybe you should take my name and website off of there after you get the info. I have to tell you the peeps that first told me about the hooker spot were old middle class white people. I scoffed, but after driving through there a few times, either they were right or Tyler Perry is shooting a movie about Good Girls Gone Bad or Bad Girls Get Good or something…

  6. jeannie Says:

Ha Ha, I think you should! Yes, that Main Street.

  7. Andisheh Nouraee Says:

Incidentally, I used to get home via the Whitehall/Murphy underpass-ish area. Not exactly paradise, but I honestly never saw anything, um, commercial there.

Try the south side of the Ponce and Charles Allen intersection, particularly the Taco Bell parking lot. That was a hot spot the whole time I lived in Midtown, although there seemed to have been some crackdowns last summer.

  9. jeannie Says:

I’m sorry, I didn’t realize you were the gun totin’ guy. In that case, just walk down the street and ask someone.
I, btw, love the area and if I ever live up there again I will probably buy a house in EP as close to the MARTA line as I can get. I take my two daughters on the train -and in a car (and on a plane) through there any time I’m up there, without a gun.

The guys up there will probably appreciate the free publicity.

Check out the corners near the old Archer High School (not Harper-Archer HS, just Archer). Really, much of Perry is.

I also seem to remember my APS school having a lot of pretty blatant and open dealing, but I don’t think that is what you are looking for.

i usually get my score around james p brawley dr and north ave.

actually, just drive around the bluff. that whole area is ridiculous.

  12. Parkway Peddler Says:

I ride my bike home from work on that stretch of Charles Allen (/Parkway) between Ponce and North by the Taco Bell, and it’s hard NOT to see drug deals going down there. Riding a bike down that block is kind of like watching the opening credits of The WIre unfold in real life.

I call that intersection “Crackhead Crossings.” Whatever you do though, DO NOT ALERT THE ENTIRE ATLANTA POLICE DEPARTMENT which is only located about two blocks away.

A couple of places I think are close to you - at least they are close to a couple of your gun toting experiments.

1895 Memorial Dr & 2199 College Ave. Both are in the parking lots of small strip centers and see plenty of daytime activity.

  15. E Says:

Edgewood @ Yonge, on the south side - just jogged by that one yesterday and business was thriving, apparently.

As others have noted, the whole crack corner neighborhood around the Ponce/Boulevard intersection. You can’t swing a dead cat without hitting a toothless crack whore and a half dozen dealers. Thank god the police are on top of that one!

And speaking of ironic locations, there’s one on the other end of Boulevard, where it dead ends in front of the Federal Pen.

  16. Rush L Says:

I just get my maid to get my stash for me. Why go out on the streets yourself?

  17. Lain Says:

Wow. I just returned to this post and all of my corners have already been hashed out (…sorry).

I’ll echo the 1895 Memorial Drive one though. There’s always something going on there.

I don’t drive by Edgewood and Yonge/Jackson all too often, but whenever I do it seems like they’re open for business.

And speaking of The Wire, the block bounded by Blvd, C. Allen, Ponce, and North seem like Atlanta’s Hamsterdam (and has been for the 25 years I’ve ridden up and down Ponce). Though the last two times I’ve been by there’s been a sea of blue lights flashing and folks all in the streets.

I wonder what it’ll look like once the police move out of City Hall East.

  18. Scott Henry Says:

I sit in the cube next to you, but I’ll play this game, yo. You should hit the corner of Glen Iris and East Ave., over by CL’s old offices. Folks would be dealing there until the wee hours. Word up, my brotha.

“I ride my bike home from work on that stretch of Charles Allen (/Parkway) between Ponce and North by the Taco Bell, and it’s hard NOT to see drug deals going down there.”

When we first moved to Charles Allen we were told by neighbors that the large apartment complex on the S/E corner of Ponce & Parkway accounted for up to 50% of all crack sold in the city. The number might not be accurate, but with the amount of activity it doesn’t seem to be much of a stretch.

Hard as it is to believe, that corner is a lot better than it used to be.

Joseph E. Lowery and Joseph Boone Blvd( formerly simpson road)

    Wellington St and Abernathy

Joseph E Boone and James P Brawley

    Joseph E Lowery and MLK

    Mcdaniel St

The list goes on and on
