Big support for Troy Davis
September 22, 2008 at 11:00 am by Mara Shalhoup in News
Troy Anthony Davis, who is scheduled for execution tomorrow despite a heap of evidence that suggests he might be innocent, has gathered the support of former President Jimmy Carter, Nobel Peace Prize-winner Desmond Tutu, Pope Benedict XVI, the Rev. Al Sharpton, U.S. Rep. John Lewis, Libertarian presidential hopeful Bob Barr, and New York Times columnist Bob Herbert.
But his only really hope lies with the Supreme Court of Georgia, the U.S. Supreme Court, and — yeah, right — George Bush.
Yesterday’s AJC described a visit the Rev. Sharpton paid to Davis on Georgia’s death row:
“He was not overly optimistic or pessimistic,” said the Rev. Sharpton, who visited Davis … at the request of Davis’ family. “He was suprisingly upbeat. He seemed like he was depending on his faith to see him through.”
Herbert, in his Friday Times column, opined:
Putting someone to death whose guilt is uncertain is always perverted, but there’s an extra dose of perversion in this case.
The United States Supreme Court is scheduled to make a decision on whether to hear a last-ditch appeal by Mr. Davis on Sept. 29. That’s six days after the state of Georgia plans to kill him.
And this morning, NPR chimed in, quoting the Southern regional director of Amnesty International, Jared Feuer:
“Troy Anthony Davis’ case symbolizes all that is wrong with the death penalty. You have questions of improper witness handling. You have procedural obstacles that get in the way of the truth. You have issues of race and, ultimately, you have a system that can’t go back and correct its mistakes.”

I am in Peterborough UK. I have contributed to the email from CCHR. I have written a letter. I have just found out that the BBC have no mention of this case since 2007 and have contacted them via local radio. It is 9.16 am here at the moment. I will ring the number at 2.00 pm our time, 8.00 am your time.

They will kill an innocent! that’s crazy!
Why don’t they listen to us?

Murderer Davis, media whore Sharpton, and a long list of supportive clueless lib fools, like those who submitted comments here, may be added to the reasons why many whites will not vote for Obama. After cop killer Davis is fried, you can catch the next bus to Nevada to protest at the OJ trial.

We do not need innocent blood on the hands of the American people! Grant him a stay!

I just called two numbers:
404-656-5651 and after I chose 7, it sounded like I was getting transferred then the line went dead. Twice.
404-656-5712 some guy named Greg(?) answered and said he would relay my requests. Didn’t get my name and when I asked if he needed it, he hung up. Nice.
I’ve never been a death penalty supporter and this is no exception. But I’ve also never been this affected by a case. Maybe it’s because Troy and I are around the same age, I don’t know. Maybe I think of the things I’ve done while he’s been on death row for something he didn’t do. I want to shake some sense into these people but all I’ve been doing for the past two hours is cry. We’re no better than the Taliban we’re “trying” to rid Afghanistan. Pathetic.

v racer - I have not posted on this particular entry, but have on several Troy Davis blog entries. I can’t speak for the others, but I am hardly a lib, so I guess that just leaves clueless fool. I hope people on this blog don’t confuse your idiocy with Conservatism, it would take me a year of posts to overcome just one of your posts in my effort to generate respect for Conservatism here.
