‘Bomb Obama’

October 10, 2008 at 12:08 pm by Thomas Wheatley in News

Last night’s U.S. Senate Debate in Perry, Ga. sounds like it was a helluva time. Anger similar to that reported elsewhere was present.

From the Associated Press’ Shannon McCaffrey’s telling of events:

Chambliss supporters waved “Saxby” signs and offered up a sustained “boos” when Martin mentioned Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama.

“Bomb Obama,” one woman hollered.

From Jim Tharpe’s AJC report:

One of [Democrat nominee Jim] Martin’s answers was obliterated by jeers from [U.S. Sen. Saxby] Chambliss backers — most of them from middle Georgia — when Martin alluded to U.S. Sen. Barack Obama being sworn in as president. Some audience members shouted, “No Bama!”

Also at the event were Bernita from BlogForDemocracy — she liveblogged the event — and the Macon Telegraph’s Travis Fain. Fain’s write-up of the debate can be viewed here. If there are any Chambliss supporters who attended or covered the event, leave your thoughts about the debate in the comments or send me a link to what you wrote about it.

Both of those characterizations are rediculous. I’d expect better from Bernita considering it was her lot who were booing during Chambliss’ answers and disrupting the entire event.

At first it was a steady back and forth of just cheering for their own respective candidates. But soon the union members who Martin bussed in just started booing during Chambliss’ answers. It was quickly followed by jeers when Martin spoke by Saxby supporters.

Not to play a who started it game, but it was clearly the Atlanta people Martin bussed in who started the negative and chaotic tone.

Marc, none of what you mentioned justifies bomb threats against a Presidential candidate. This is just more of the same “it’s the other guys fault, we said this” stuff we’ve been hearing from the McCain campaign throughout this election.

  3. Jimmy Says:

Random, were you there? I was there, and no one said “bomb Obama”, they were saying “no obama” (see Jim Tharpe’s article). Also, there were beer bottles around the Martin bus. Real classy Martin campaign… Get Union workers boozed up and take them to the debate.
