Streetalk: Does Obama’s attempt to stop smoking inspire you?

January 18, 2009 at 12:05 pm by Jeff Slate in News, Streetalk

Jacob: It might inspire me a little bit. A lot more people will respect him if he quits. No one respects somebody killing himself, and that’s all cigarettes are — cancer sticks. It would be good if we all quit, and I hope Obama makes it. It would make me respect him more and it might help me. Just seeing your friends quit helps. My idea of being president is that you’re still a human being — but you have a voice and your voice represents everybody. So if he quit smoking, it would be a big thing.

Erica: No. Everyone knows smoking is bad for you and in the end you quit for yourself. I actually kind of like that he’s a smoker. It’s very human to have some sort of flaw. I mean, I don’t want to see a picture of him holding a bottle of Jack Daniels with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, but you should quit for yourself and not for anyone else. I don’t care whether he quits but he should be careful about his PR. Actually, if I saw him smoking at a bar I’d probably think he’s hot stuff.

Tre: I won’t stop. If my mother couldn’t get me to stop, Obama can’t make me stop. In fact, Obama should get up, after his inauguration speech, and fire up a cigarette. Have a glass of ‘nac [Cognac] and a cigarette and keep it real for ‘09. That should be his motto. He shouldn’t quit, but he should legalize marijuana. As long as he doesn’t get a tan like George Hamilton, it’s cool with me. The cigarettes kind of do your skin in. But if he continues to smoke, he should try to lower the cigarette tax.

I used marijuana for some time. I quit with no withdrawals, no crankiness, etc. Marijuana just became boring, which it is when there’s no thrill of rebellion. No one seemed to care if I used marijuana or not. Marijuana is widely used and it’s socially accepted by most everyone these days. Marijuana use would probably drop even more if it was legalized. All the excitement of breaking the law and rebellion would be gone. But, cigarettes? I had a real love affair with them. But, one day I heard a voice that said, “have another cigarette”. It occurred to me that I was addicted to tobacco. Something I’ve never seen with anyone using marijuana. I read that it costs 10x as much to keep the 2.5% of people who really are addicts in jail as it does to treat them. They say they have a pretty good success rate of keeping addicts off drugs with continued treatment. But, almost all addicts go back to using once they get out of jail. It’s strange how tobacco’s so deadly & addictive and it’s legal to use. But pot isn’t. I remember that I got mad about being a slave to tobacco. I crumpled up a brand new pack of boro’s & threw them out the car window. Littering was pretty stupid, I regret that & it’s lucky there wasn’t a cop around. Our state has a very stiff fine for littering. I used procrastination as a constructive tool by telling myself I’d have one later. I never had another one. I just kept increasing the time when I told myself I’d have another cigarette. That was twelve years ago. I still think about & want to smoke today. But, I’ll have a cigarette in another 12 years. Heehee! I’ve smoked some potent marijuana & I’ve never missed using pot. I recall that the more potent the pot, the less I used. I don’t get on pot smokers or cigarette smokers about how they should quit. Sure cigarettes will kill you (pot won’t). But, I’m not about to be a hypocrite and say I did mine. Now, don’t you do yours. Besides, it’s really a cheap shot to use your drug of choice, like alcohol & tobacco, then tell pot users not to use their drug of choice. Especially, since pot doesn’t kill the user & it’s obviously not very addictive. To most people, marijuana is the safer choice of drug than alcohol or tobacco for relaxation. Plus, pot treats hundreds of illnesses. Sometimes better than any pharmaceutical drugs. The same can’t be said for alcohol or tobacco. I’d be most impressed if President Obama took the same attitude about tobacco and marijuana. It’s just wrong for our government to have a double standard and bias against marijuana use. Teenagers would have a much harder time getting marijuana from the grocery store. They card for age and drug dealers don’t. If marijuana was legalized it would be impossible for drug dealers to compete, too. This would mean less drug dealers for kids to get pot from. Then they’d really have a much harder time getting pot than they do right now. At least the president can get the best help getting of the cigarettes. God bless you President Obama. Whatever you decide to do about smoking cigarettes. Please, support the legalization of marijuana. We have enough hypocrites using alcohol & tobacco who want to keep marijuana illegal. We could save a lot on enforcement. Think how much sale tax we could get of the sale of marijuana to adults, too.

It seems that it is more easier to be inspired with helthy living without smoke and addicton than by holdind somebody up as an example.

More than 50 studies show that human papillomaviruses cause over ten times more lung cancers than they pretend are caused by secondhand smoke. Passive smokers are more likely to have been exposed to this virus, so the anti-smokers’ studies, because they are all based on nothing but lifestyle questionnaires, have been cynically DESIGNED to falsely blame passive smoking for all those extra lung cancers that are really caused by HPV.

The anti-smokers have committed the same type of fraud with every disease they blame on smoking and passive smoking, as well as ignoring other types of evidence that proves they are lying, such as the fact that the death rates from asthma have more than doubled since their movement began.

And it’s a lie that passive smoking causes heart disease. AMI deaths in Pueblo actually ROSE the year after the smoking ban.

Carol – this sounds like a script segment from “Thank You For Smoking”?

Passive smokers are more likely to have been exposed to HOV than to what?
