Peach Pundit editor: Stop Georgia Power nuke bill

February 18, 2009 at 4:53 pm by Thomas Wheatley in News

Opponents of a controversial piece of legislation have a powerful voice on their side.

Erick Erickson, editor of Peach Pundit, sent a message to readers today asking them to tell their lawmakers to vote “no” on Senate Bill 31. That bill, which sailed through the state Senate last week, would allow Georgia Power to charge customers in advance for two new proposed nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle. He explains the decision here.

That position is sure to catch the attention of many state lawmakers — particularly House members who are now mulling over the legislation.

You can rest assured they won’t miss the post. Seated in the House’s press box, a journalist gets a clear view of lawmakers’ laptops. Throughout the day, you’re bound to see Peach Pundit on several screens.

Erickson’s letter is posted after the jump.

Dear Peach Pundit Reader,

In all the years of Peach Pundit, we’ve only done this once until today. We at Peach Pundit are (at least a large majority of us) big fans of nuclear energy. But we are deeply concerned that our state legislature is so committed to nuclear energy that they are willing to advance terrible legislation to make it happen.

Right now, Senate Bill 31 (SB 31) is before the State House. The bill would destroy every incentive Georgia Power has to keep costs down on new nuclear power plant construction and would end all incentives to mitigate problems related to the construction. It would do this by requiring Georgia Power customers to pay for the plant now, instead of the company fronting the money.

In effect, Georgia Power customers would be forced into buying a car we had no say in choosing before it’s even put together, and would have to pay all the extra charges for overruns too.

Please considering clicking here. If you follow the link and put in your zip-code, you’ll get the phone number of your state representative. Please call him and tell him to vote against the Georgia Nuclear Energy Financing Act.

There has to be a better way than S.B. 31.

Thanks,
Erick Erickson
