So, stricter gun control laws will make it harder to get a gun? I suppose that's why it's SO difficult to buy cocaine or heroin or methamphetamine? Because those substances have been illegal for decades, and I haven't noticed a scarcity in the black market yet...

In fact, it got a lot easier to buy them *after* criminalization than it was prior to it.

As to steep penalties, the minimum sentence in the State of Georgia for murder is life imprisonment. The average time served for murder is 7 years. Just how steep a sentence were you aiming for if they had a gun, and exactly how much of a deterrent do you think you will achieve when you have to let them go to clear room for the next wave of convicts?

I suppose you could legalize drugs. That should clear out the prisons quite a bit, and clear out the courts a good bit too. Of course, try getting that done in the legislature, and you might see exactly why an actual solution to the problem seems beyond our reach currently.

The only laws that can be enforced are ones that 90% of society voluntarily complies with. Our legal system can deal with a small minority of offenders, but it cannot deal with a significant portion of the population breaking the law. That causes the entire system to overload, and then the judicial process becomes hopeless for any crime.

Doctors committing malpractice kill more people every year in the USA than guns do.

Want to outlaws doctors?

As someone who had his car broken into an robbed recently, I'm not big on the idea of crime rise being a perception. Nonetheless, I enjoyed reading this article from the New York Daily News on their own perception of crime rates rising:

PoC is a ruthless son of a bitch. It broke in and stole my TV, Laptop, and wife's Jewelry in January. Just about every restaurant I frequent has been visited by PoC for their televisions. In 2008 12 houses on my block were robbed by PoC. Not my street, my block! I'm so glad it's all in my head. Queen Shirls says it ain't so. so I sleep good at night.

I'll sleep better soon when I don't live in Atlanta.

I think a lot of people have made very good points on here. However to solve this crime problem we have to sort out facts, emotions and etc. and yes I understand that this is hard to do after being a victim of crime.

The fact is that we have fewer police on the streets(no matter what the reason).

The fact is that in a lot of neighborhoods crime goes unreported, and has become a norm because some people are afraid of the repercussions.

The fact is that often the criminals don't live far from the crimes.

The fact is that the increase in foreclosures and empty homes provide a haven for all breeds of criminals (thieves, drug dealers, whores, and etc)

The fact is areas that look "dirty"(overgrown bushes, litter, and etc) attract criminals

I think ya'll see where I'm going with this. Let list some facts and attempt at finding individual solutions.

Lets do things like join the civic league and other local organizations that focus on improvement and reducing urban decay. Lets clan up our neighborhoods. Lets put up security cameras on our homes that also record whats going on in the streets.

Lets try to reduce the demand for crime....Meaning....drug dealers need someone to sell their drugs to....whores need someone to screw....thieves need someone to sell their stolen goods to....Lets reduce/eliminate their demand and report those that would hlp to increase it.

The truth is you can't rely on single individuals such as the mayor or chief because atlanta has become wholly inefficient. There are plenty of people in city administration who suck at their job and they were not voted in. We need to demand efficiency and that people be fired when they suck regardless of their race.

And lastly although gun control wont solve the problem it will help. And by gun control I dont mean that people should not be allowed to own guns but that they should be required to register them(all of them), keep them in a safe manner, and immediately report if they are lost or stolen. And they should face very steep penalties if they don't. Doing this will help without interfering with anyone's second amendment rights.

I can tell you this, if i owned a bar there is no way i would have flat screens. It is just not worth it. Watch TV at home. Get drunk at my bar. Seems like a big hassle and safety concern just so people can watch ESPN 6 while guzzling.

s. dekalb voter (and people who think like him/her) is a big part of the problem.

perhaps s. dekalb voter is the fence for all of those stolen flat screens?

check his/her home and bank records.

We have the perception of a mayor and the perception of a police chief. All we have are two hacks who are top-notch at putting their own ridiculous spins on the facts.
