Statewide DUI crackdown starts tonight

June 19, 2009 at 7:20 pm by Thomas Wheatley in News

Starting at 9 p.m. tonight, more than 500 police agencies in Georgia will kick off “Operation Zero Tolerance,” an annual statewide campaign targeting drunk drivers.

From the AJC:

The DUI crackdown is a part of the GOHS “100 Days of Summer H.E.A.T.” initiative that runs through Labor Day weekend. Traffic enforcement officers will be patrolling the state’s highways all summer, watching for speeders, impaired drivers and those violating seat belt and child restraint laws.

The campaign’s website seems to depict a car that crashed into a giant bomb from a Spy vs. Spy cartoon.

If you do find yourself too drunk to drive, remember you have options. Atlanta-based nonprofit SafeRide America has phone numbers to call to get you home safe. Citizens for Progressive Transit’s A-TRAIN Trip Planner can help you find a MARTA bus or train that’ll get you to and from the bar. There’s also Zingo, a designated-driver service that drives you and your car home and then zips away on a scooter. And you can always ask your friendly bartender to call you a cab. Just keep it in mind.
