Noelle Mcllwaine, a boudoir photographer at Divine29 Studios, takes scintillating but tasteful photos that are sure to bring sexy back to your bedroom.
What attracted you to this form of photography?
I believe each photographer sees things differently. Each photographer has their own view. I feel that the human form is so beautiful. A lot of women need a boost, and they want to capture themselves at a certain age when they feel really gorgeous. Everyone needs at least one “narcissist” picture.
Who is your typical client?
I don’t really have a typical client. I have men and women who are getting photos done for their spouse, a lot of couples stuff, and artistic nudes. I always tell people that I won’t shoot anything I can’t edit in front of my kids. The pictures that I take are meant to be hung up on your wall and shown to your friends. I want your mother to think it’s the most beautiful picture she has ever seen.
How do you prepare for a photo shoot?
The first thing I do is ask the client what they want to get out of it, because they have a different vision than I do. I’ll ask them to bring all their clothes to the shoot so I can see what they like to wear and what their personality is like. Then I’ll ask if the photos are a gift for someone, to get more of a sense of where they’re coming from.
Are clients apprehensive when they come in?
Sure they are. During the first 15 minutes, people are pretty nervous. It can be intimidating, because I’m standing there looking at them. After the first 15 minutes, though, we start really talking, goofing around and people begin to relax. By the end of the session, we’re all having a great time.
How does it feel to share the intimacy required for the photos?
You know, I tell people I’m a mom of five kids so I’ve seen it all. I feel like the human form is so beautiful that it really is a great experience to be able to help people see that about themselves. Once they see their photos, I always say to them, “Did you know you were this beautiful?” It’s really just the greatest feeling. It’s the best drug ever.
Where is your favorite place to shoot?
My favorite place is Cabbagetown, because I am really into urban stuff and there’s all this graffiti and everything down there that complements the model. Those are just my tastes though. I can shoot anything anywhere.
Have you taken boudoir photos of yourself?
Oh yeah, absolutely! I have a total narcissist picture. Every time I look at it I say, “Man I am hot!”
What advice would you give to those considering taking boudoir photos?
My advice would be to do it now. Even if you think you need to lose 10 pounds, I can take that off with lighting or editing. People just always put things off and feel like it’s not the right time, but it is. You will never be any younger or more beautiful than you are right now!
