Reason #1 that the US has the most innovative drug companies in the world – profit and patent protection. Patents permit the recovery of the hundreds of millions of dollars (billions even?) that it costs to develop innovative drugs like Singulair.
The profit provides the incentive and the operating capital to develop the next wonder drug.
