Sen. Jeff Chapman jumps into Georgia governor’s race

September 3, 2009 at 5:04 pm by Thomas Wheatley in News

State Sen. Jeff Chapman, R-Brunswick, confirms via email that he’s added his name to the long list of elephants who hope to be Georgia’s next governor.

Chapman’s efforts to protect Jekyll Island from what many called inappropriate development won him fans from both parties. His stance on that issue also irked plenty of people, including members of his own party, as the deal was proposed by well-known GOP fundraisers. Chapman recently voiced his support for more serious water conservation measures.

Jim Galloway notes that this might be a bit of a disheartening news to Johnson, who most likely enjoyed the strongest coastal Georgia support of any of the candidates.

The state lawmaker’s opponents for the 2010 GOP gubernatorial nomination include state Rep. Austin Scott of Tifton, Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel, state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine, state Sen. Eric Johnson of Savannah and U.S. Congressman Nathan Deal. Oh yeah, and Ray McBerry of McDonough.

  1. Rule .303 Says:

Republican leadership in the State Senate hates him.

As a Republican who’s disgusted with the Republican party of GA, that makes me want to vote for him.

See no further that the GA Power bill, SB 31.

    Go Jeff!

  2. Ronald R Says:

Chapman may have the best record of voting his convictions and serving the public interest of any of the candidates in the field but how many people know his name or are familiar with his principles and legislative record? It would be a shame if a first-rate gubernatorial candidate such as Chapman loses out b/c he doesn’t have the funds or connections to get his message out, but this may well be the case unless he has a real whiz bang campaign staff to help him overcome a late start and a lack of name recognition.

  3. Benjy Says:

Let’s face it. The fact that commenters on Fresh Loaf (including myself) wish Chapman were the GOP nominee pretty much ensures that he will NOT be the nominee. A moderate, actual-maverick Republican who has the enthusiastic support of a bunch of left-leaners is unlikely to excite the GOP’s conservative base – especially in Georgia.

  4. jsimmons Says:

We need a governor who is not a yes man. It is about time we elect some officials who want to do the right thing for the people of Georgia who is afraid of nothing! Jeff Chapman has the experience and the backbone we need in a governor!! Jeff, you have my vote!

  5. Chris Says:

Jeff Chapman just launched his campaign site, well, it is a mini site, the full site will be up soon.
