‘Republican’ robocall bloopers in District 6?

November 2, 2009 at 7:00 pm by Thomas Wheatley in News

Seems the Atlanta mayor’s race isn’t the only political contest with mysterious operatives trying to brand a candidate as a “closeted Republican.”

A li’l birdie landed on our windowsill earlier today and informed us that District 6 voters have received similar calls about Tad Christian, one of the six candidates running to represent the Midtown, Morningside and Candler Park neighborhoods. (Incumbent Anne Fauver isn’t seeking re-election.)

Our winged friend says they received a phone call on Friday in which a recorded female voice said — shock! — “Tad Christianson” was an elephant.

Hours later, our source received another call. The same female voice said she wanted to retract the earlier call, as it turns out the Morningside resident isn’t a Republican. She added that Christian’s voter registration information could be viewed at the Fulton County Board of Elections. Baffling.

Here’s what’s really strange about this: What kind of amateur invests the time and money into a robocall and doesn’t even get the candidate’s name correct? Even more odd: What kind of goofball then retracts the call?

Or maybe it’s a good way to raise a candidate’s profile.

Anyways, “Republican” robocalls. They’re not just for mayoral campaigns.

Tad maybe beiung a republican doesn’t bother me nearly as much as the fact that the morningside lenox park neigbhor association is saying he might have misused/appropriated its e-mail list. I’d hate for a republican to win, but, if they do I at least want them to win fair and square and not by cheating and misusing a contact list for a nonpolitical organization.

engaged: I got a spam email about voting for steve brodie, and I have gotten spams about voting for both Norwood and Reed. I dont know whose lists they are using, but it seems to be pretty par for the course this election.

TW, I scooped you on the Tad repugnocall story – on your own blog last Saturday afternoon. (And I am deeply hurt that you don’t monitor my contributions. Pride was more important?)

The robocall has got to have been Liz being divisive and polarizing – that’s what Tad calls her, so it’s true, right? And Liz must have been soooo pissed when she had to retract. A lot of us would pay to see a video of that scene at Liz HQ.

Damn you, scooper. I saw that but thought it was just a riff on the “GOP” robocalls.

@TW – My faith is restored along with my ego. But as they say, you can’t make this stuff up. At least, I can’t.
