Jason Carter to kickoff state Senate campaign

Grandson of former president intends to fill Adelman’s soon-to-be-vacant seat

Atlanta attorney Jason Carter (and grandson of former President Jimmy Carter) informed friends last night via email that he was launching a campaign to represent Senate District 42, currently held by David Adelman.

Adelman was recently nominated by President Barack Obama to become the next U.S. Ambassador to Singapore. If Adelman’s confirmed, Carter plans to run for his vacant seat.

Jim Galloway notes that the district Carter hopes to represent — which includes Decatur, Chamblee and Stone Mountain — is home to a sizable Jewish population. The elder Carter’s views on Israel and Palestine have ruffled some feathers in the past, to be sure.

Whether the beliefs of the grandfather will impact the political chances of the grandson is too early (and complex) to call. If an opponent makes it an issue — Galloway says 2008 Superior Court Judge candidate Tom Stubbs has expressed interest in running for the same seat — Carter will have a chance to state his case.

Carter’s launched a website where supporters can sign up for information or get involved. On Wednesday, Dec. 9, he’ll host a campaign kickoff at Twain’s in downtown Decatur. Kids are invited, he said, as he’s bringing his. Festivities start at 6:30 p.m.
