Levitas drops out of race, GriftDrift ponders run

Longtime pol says he’s done, longtime blogger says he’ll consider running

State Rep. Kevin Levitas, D-Atlanta, surprised the masses today with his announcement  that he wouldn’t seek a third term under the Gold Dome. Blog For Democracy and Peach Pundit both have the press release. Levitas says he wants to devote more time to his family and business.

The DeKalb County rep, whose father Elliott was a former state lawmaker and then a congressman, was a peculiar donkey in the sense that he wasn’t opposed to siding with Republicans on some issues. In fact, his unwillingness to be a team player led some in his own party to question his political loyalties.

Levitas’ departure from the race creates quite a pickle for Democrats and Republicans. His late announcement comes well after qualifying ended, leaving both major parties without a candidate. Whoever wants to represent the district will most likely have to start collecting signatures and then run as an independent or a third-party candidate. But have no fear...

...which is Levitas’ district. This might be a really fun election season.
