MARTA holds public hearings about budget tonight, tomorrow

Cash-strapped transit agency expected to cut routes, lay off employees to balance books

Thanks to a drop in revenues, MARTA has proposed slashing routes and laying off employees to balance its books. Before it does so, the cash-strapped transit agency must hold several public hearings to hear from riders and the community.

The first two pow-wows are tonight in Roswell and College Park. The final two will be held tomorrow night in Atlanta and Decatur. All meetings begin at 7 p.m. and last for two hours. Copies of the budget, in addition to lists of proposed cuts and other information, will be available at the meeting. If you’d like to review the info before you head to the hearings, you can download fact sheets and other documents from MARTA’s website.

We’ve pasted a list of public hearing details after the jump.  If you’re unable to attend the meetings, you can still register your comments with MARTA by either by calling 404-848-5299, writing to 2424 Piedmont Road, NE Atlanta, Georgia 30324-3330, completing an online comment card at www.itsmarta.com, or faxing comments to 404-848-4179. The deadline to submit comments is June 15, 2010. MARTA’s board of directors is expected to vote on the changes on June 28.
