Best of Atlanta 2009 is all about being Filthy Rich

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

How can you be down with the Filthy Rich? Check out this year’s Best of Atlanta ballot, which you’ll find July 8 only at clatl.com/bestofatlanta.

Why all the glam talk in such glum economic times? After all, times are tight. We want it, but we hesitate to buy it. A trip to the mall? Please, we’re just window shopping. Stocking up on groceries for meals at home — instead of fancy feasts at our favorite restaurants — have become our saving grace.

Thing is, there’s an abundance of riches among Atlanta’s people, places and things. We are truly rich with options on where to go and what to do — so much so, it can be downright dirty. Sure, there’s the shiny, swanky side of Atlanta, but there’s the gritty, hidden and cheap side, too. Help us shine a light on both!

In addition to Critics Picks that highlight ways you can wrap yourself in luxury — in both authentic and untraditional ways — we want to hear from you. Your Readers Picks will uncover new gems and remind us of the perennial favorites. And after you vote, we want you to answer the big question everyone loves to fantasize about: What would you do if you were filthy rich? We’ll have quick online polls on our blogs, and new this year — a Facebook application that allows you to share the wealth.

So cash in on July 8 and make sure to look for the Best of Atlanta ballot!

Starting a nonprofit? Get a logo and website designed for free

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Matchstic, a marketing firm based near Ormewood Park, and a few other partners are offering about $80,000 in services to the winning nonprofit that applies. The deadline is March 23, and surprisingly, the application isn’t filled with questions that most fledgling nonprofits won’t be able to answer. The “prize” includes a new logo, Web site design and development, promotional print materials (and the copy writing and actual printing services) and some help with strategy and brand positioning.

It’s true the “On the House” campaign will probably benefit the providers, too, but there’s no harm in supporting a community organization in the process, right? Last year’s winner was City Church Eastside.

Obama or McCain: ‘Whatever You Like,’ students say

Monday, November 3rd, 2008

The students of Atlanta’s Ron Clark Academy keep true democracy in mind with their remix of T.I.’s “Whatever You Like.” It gets a little hard to figure out the “arguments” toward the end, but I’d want to be in this class. CNN captured the video.

Wanted: People with cool homes

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

Urban Living, CL’s monthly “Shelter from bland living” section, is back, and looking for a few cool homes. Apartments, lofts and condos are also eligible. If you live in a neighborhood where CL is available and your place is unique somehow — interesting-looking, history-filled or funky fun — leave a comment below with a description, or e-mail chante.lagon@creativeloafing.com.

Maybe your love of film noir has turned your pad into a virtual movie set. Or maybe you’ve painstakingly renovated the original 19th-century wood design. Commercial kitchen in the basement? Secret hallways? Panic rooms? That’s all cool stuff.

Once you leave a comment, we’ll follow up and ask for a photo or two. Just keep in mind that if we feature your home in Urban Living this spring, you’ll be opening up your home to CL readers … so tidy up already.

Road Home to New Orleans deadline here

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Although the news has been focused more on the lack of funds distribution, here’s an important tidbit for displaced New Orleanians in Atlanta looking to move back home: The deadline for the Road Home program is today, July 31.

Louisiana homeowners who owned and occupied their homes at the time of Hurricane Katrina or Rita and suffered damage as a result of one of the storms may be eligible to receive assistance through The Road Home program. Owners of single-units, double-units, condominiums, town homes and mobile homes are encouraged to apply.

Program officials stressed that this is a deadline to apply, not a deadline for the entire program. The Housing Assistance Centers will still be available to homeowners for initial appointments and advisory service appointments past the July 31 deadline.

Folks can apply at www.roadtola.org or call 888-ROAD-2-LA.

Blood Mountain Survival Guide

Friday, June 1st, 2007

A week ago today, I was preparing to rough it. Back-to-back metal mayhem at the Tabernacle with the Deftones on Friday, Mastodon on Saturday. Although the crowd, and crowd surfers, showed up like waves on North Shore for those Cali boys — big, aggressive and plentiful — the real test is to survive Blood Mountain. The guys from Mastodon should know, what with songs like “Colony of Birchmen” (”Hunt for ogres and dwarves/lion slicer/run with deea-aath! … white faces coming closer with every step … taking breath without happenstance/carve my teeth out ripping the sheep’s head curse”) — one of my favorites, actually. There’s talk of rations running thin, flying nymphs with (probably bad) omens and hearts “gone away.”

So, to help all their merch-buying fans navigate the terrific yet horrifying territory called Blood Mountain (which also happens to be the sixth-tallest mountain in Georgia), the band offered a three-fold Survival Guide and Blood Mountain lighter. There’s a map with various points on the trail, like Fields/Grave Yards, and the Birch Forest, which is described: “Here you will find a colony of Birchmen as well as a sparse population of Ogres and Dwarves. When hunger ensues, find nourishment in the brains of local sheep.” There’s even a crossword puzzle to nourish your sense of fun. Damn I love this band.bloodmtn-front.jpg

ATLANTA FOODIES CAN GET THEIR FILL WITH NEW DINING BLOG
Introducing OmnivoreATL.com, Creative Loafing’s newest addition to blog family

ATLANTA — We’ve all got to eat. So when it comes to consuming honest, thoughtful information about Atlanta’s dining scene, foodies can count on Creative Loafing’s newest blog, OmnivoreATL.com, to deliver quality preparation, comforting content, and a big helping of fun. The blog launched Monday, May 14.

OminvoreATL.com features contributions by CL’s food editor, Besha Rodell, along with longtime food writer and Grazing columnist Cliff Bostock. The blog’s mission is to discuss food, restaurants and life, and the intersection of food and culture. It will be updated daily, with posts that include local and national restaurant news, musings on the Atlanta dining scene and the role that food plays in our lives. Honesty and thoughtfulness guide each post.

“Cliff and I both enjoy doing the restaurant reviews that appear in the paper, but both of us have so much more to say, ” Rodell said. “This space will be a place where we can really explore restaurants and how food intersects with our lives in ways we haven’t been able to do before. We’re excited to join the fantastic community of bloggers in Atlanta.”

“Our audience is going to enjoy reading Besha Rodell and Cliff Bostock more often than just once a week,” said CL Editor Ken Edelstein. “And the blog format also gives that audience a chance to get a conversation going in both directions about food in Atlanta.”

OmnivoreATL.com is meant to complement CL’s Food & Drink section, and comments from readers and other bloggers are encouraged. In this way, CL hopes to form a community from the thousands of readers who visit the Food & Drink section and the Good Eats restaurant database each week.

Along with CLFreshLoaf.com and CLBadHabits.com, OminvoreATL.com is the latest addition to Creative Loafing’s growing family of blogs. You can view all of the blogs, as well as CL’s 2006 Food Issue – a James Beard Award finalist – at atlanta.creativeloafing.com.

Mic Club for the masses?

Thursday, May 10th, 2007

I wonder if any of the regulars at Apache Cafe’s Mic Club will be entering Scion’s Prospect contest. Would-be winners need to have a bio and demo, so the freestyling game needs to be stepped up a bit to enter. But $5,000 and a fully produced video for your Hi-Tek produced song might be worth it.

‘MTV News’: Deerhunter, Black Lips
