Time and Place: Splash
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009This photo was taken on June 26, just before noon at the Fountain of Rings in Centennial Park. It seemed like almost every square inch of fountain space was spoken for as people tried to keep cool. It was entertaining to watch everyone enjoy the cooling blast of water from the fountains while trying to beat the summertime heat. This photo captures that fun of just letting loose and enjoying yourself on a hot summer day. More than once I thought about putting my camera down and joining them.

Saturday, June 27th, 2009Photo of the Day: Life’s a beach
Friday, June 26th, 2009Last week’s Decatur Beach Party was a chaotic, noisy nirvana in the midst of Atlanta’s landlocked summer. This event has been going on for more than 20 years and it’s a bigger hit than ever. It’s pretty clear why Decaturites and Atlantans from all over love it though — you can get down and dirty with your kids in the sand in between beers and funnel cakes. Or you can grab a lawn chair and watch the merriment from afar with only your toes in the sand. Any way you take your faux beaches, you’ve got to admit they’re fun.

Photo of the Day: Standing tall
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009Time and Place: Dancey pants
Wednesday, June 24th, 2009I arrived at 79 Poplar Street in downtown Atlanta to witness Mark Farina rip the city a new one. I’ll be honest, I come from a background of punk rock and stagedives, but I’m always willing to check out something new. I walked into the club looking underdressed and feeling like a nuisance lugging my camera and flash around while taking photos of strangers dancing the night away. Luckily, after being there for about 10 minutes, I don’t think people even noticed me anymore and really got back to what they were there for — a good time. I loved the fact that I was about 10 inches from the people I was shooting, but they didn’t even care. No one made wacky faces or threw up peace signs, they just danced off the work week and let Mark F. take over their brains for a bit.

Friday, June 12th, 2009Photography is a way to interpret reality and this is a tribute to afternoon beer drinking. When on those rare days you are able to have a beer in the afternoon, these are the sort of photos you take. It was taken at the Fellini’s in Candler Park on June 6.

Time and Place: A swell dance party
Friday, March 27th, 2009This week’s Time and Place photo was shot at the Lake Claire Community Land Trust drum circle which takes place the first and third Saturday of each month. The drum circle is one of Atlanta’s most unique events with people gathering around a bonfire dancing, chanting, drumming, freaking, humming, clapping and singing from sunset until midnight. The sight of silhouettes shaking it around a cascading fire to the endless throbbing beats that shift and stutter and peter out and start again is quite wonderful. This combined with the spirit of a musical potluck, as people bring their own instruments and novices beat drums with total strangers, makes it a truly communal experience. This photo was taken of a person dancing crazily with a light with which they were spinning around and around and around.

“Repent! Repent!” Shouting these words Prophet Love seemingly rose from the
dead this afternoon at Last Chance Church on Love Street in southwest Atlanta. Staging what he called a “casket demonstration,” Prophet Love presented his own funeral in hopes of saving people from the depths of hell.
“If we continue with our wrongdoing, heaven will not be our home,” he preached while sitting up in a coffin in which he had laid still for over an hour. The idea came to him to do the half funeral, half performance art after his wife and son refused his request to be cremated upon his death. “So I said I will just do my funeral myself,” Love explained.
“Its strange,” said Missionary Forte, one of five other people sitting in the church during the mock open-casket viewing.
“Its unique,” added Barbara Phillips, who says Prophet Love saved her years ago. “It demonstrates that we are all going to go through this and we better get our lives right.”
Prophet Love described lying in the coffin as “not feeling much different then laying in bed.”
“Death is inevitable,” Love said. “Be ready to meet God, repent for your wrongdoing, you know when you are doing right and wrong. There is no water in hell — hell is real. The majority of people will end up in hell.”

Photos: Atlanta job fair
Friday, March 13th, 2009On Wednesday, an estimated 20,000 people attended a job fair and career expo held at the Georgia World Congress Center. Sponsored by the Georgia Department of Labor and WSB-TV Channel 2, the event attracted attention because nearly 100 employers said they’d attend — and that they’d be hiring. State Labor Commissioner Michael Thurmond, in between interviews and talks with department officials on the convention center floor, watched the event from an overlook suite.
“What this means is that people haven’t given up hope,” Thurmond said. “People are still encouraged, people are still believing. And that’s important. Obviously, some will find jobs. Others will find opportunities for training and education. But the main thing we’re trying to do is to keep this workforce encouraged and not lose hope.”
