Huffington Post reported this afternoon that former Veep Al Gore will campaign here Sunday for Democratic Senate candidate Jim Martin. I’m sure Young Thomas will be getting us more details later.

Meanwhile, here are details on former President Bill Clinton’s visit tomorrow (or today by the time you read this) at Clark Atlanta University on behalf of Martin. For those keeping score, John McCain and Mike Huckabee have campaigned for Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss, while this gun-totin’ man joins him Wednesday and investment banker Mitt Romney stumps for him Friday.

The AJC’s reporting that both candidates aren’t planning to participate in a debate the Atlanta Press Club was to tape on Sunday — Martin because he’ll be campaigning with Gore, Chambliss apparently just because he’s a big ol’ scared-y-pants.

— Al Gore gives a speech that says we need to wean ourselves off petroleum in the next 10 years, and ATLMalcontent is skeptical. He thinks Gore is being rather hysterical.

— Gore is definitely against new off-shore oil drilling. But our governor, Sonny Perdue, thinks it’s a swell idea. Reporter-Cub gives us a reality check: The last time the U.S. had an energy crisis, the oil companies explored off the coast of Georgia and discovered that there’s no black gold/Texas tea out there.

— Folks in Dunwoody are pleased as punch to be Georgia’s newest city. At Heneghan’s Dunwoody Blog, John reports that 29 people turned out for a candidates training forum with the intention of running for mayor or city council. Leaders have also come up with a proposed vision statement for the new city.

— Doug Richards at Live Apartment Fire veers away from his customary posts on television news to talk about why the AJC still matters.

— Only 21 percent of Clayton County’s registered voters bothered to go to the polls last week, and Andre at Georgia Politics Unfiltered wonders WTF? Look for Thomas Wheatley’s insightful cover story on Clayton County in this week’s Loaf.

— Speaking of young Mr. Wheatley, the sirens at Pecanne Log can’t get enough of him. Another new post at Pecanne Log means another opportunity for a gratuitous shout-out to Wheatley. This time, they’ve found a personals site that features ads from wealthy men, including a group of of sugar daddies from Tucker. They’re already fighting over the one with the boat.

LEAVEITTOWN: The reeling housing market is accelerating Americans’ interest in New Urbanism, helping reverse the march toward suburbia that began post-WWII with the Levittown burbs.

AN INCONVENIENT YOUTH: Al Gore takes the stage with Barack Obama in Detroit to endorse the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, lending his enormous party clout to the young upstart, albeit a little late.

CHORE OF ENGINEERS: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ water plan doesn’t seem to please anyone, as Georgia officials say it doesn’t do enough to conserve Lake Lanier’s water, and everyone south says it does too much.

PLAYING DIRTY: Former Pike Nurseries CEO Randy Pike was arrested and charged with groping several women at a pool party in Dalton over the weekend.

John Coleman, founder of the Atlanta-based Weather Channel, spoke at a gathering of loons in New York and said to “finally put some light on the fraud that is global warming,” critics of the glaringly obvious changes happening in our world should sue those who are bringing it to attention, such as Al Gore and those selling carbon credits. Legal action would force them to honestly describe the policies they propose.

The gathering of loons is the serious-sounding “International Conference on Climate Change,” a global-warming deniers paradise coordinated by the Heartland Institute.

Heartland’s extreme anti-environmentalism no doubt spawns from its supporters. Between 1998 and 2005, oil giant ExxonMobil gave nearly $800,000 to Heartland. The group’s Board of Directors also explains the group’s climate change denials:

– Thomas Walton is the Director of Economic Policy at General Motors.

–James L. Johnston is a former senior economist for oil company Amoco Corporation.

–Walter F. Buchholtz is a former member of Heartland’s board of directors and worked as ExxonMobil’s Senior Issues Advisor.

–James M. Taylor is editor of Heartland’s weekly Environment & Climate News and wrote an op-ed criticizing Gore’s “Assault On Reason” insisting that “global warming threats they should not be deliberately exaggerated as a means of building support for a desired political position.”

Any day now, some sanity would be nice.
