Time and Place: Chomping

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

new_timeandplace1-1_28Mmm, doesn’t that look appetizing? As the man next to me so eloquently put it, “It looks like a bucket of dog shit, doesn’t it?” But it sure tasted excellent. This chili was being served up by the Vortex at the Chomp and Stomp chili cook-off in Cabbagetown Nov. 7. Having such a gigantic pot of chili meant that toward the end of the day the crowds were lining up at their booth.

It was fun photographing chili because it looks so disgusting, especially with direct flash, and in a giant metal pot, with chunks and brown stains lining the sides. Interestingly, despite being horrible to look at, chili is, as we all know, completely delicious. Other teams at the cook-off got quite creative with their chili naming. There was CILF (Chili I’d Like to Fork), Chilibrex (the prescription cure for headaches, backaches, and bad haircuts), Chef Boy-Ar-V, Whitey’s Mighty Chicken Chili, and the chili that was “as delicious as it is blasphemous,” the Pope-in Hot Chili.

Check out all the other delicious/disgusting photos from Chomp and Stomp.

Time and Place: Sweetest festival

news_timeandplace1-1_23

This image is from the Sweet Auburn Heritage Festival that took place Oct. 3-4. I thought it was funny how this guy’s face fit perfectly in a gap in the line of cotton candy hanging from his booth, especially because of his serious expression contrasted with something fun and light-hearted like cotton candy. Even while talking to people that walked by the booth, he never moved from that position.

Photo of the Day: Roasted pig

Cabbagetown Market held its third annual pig roast on Sept. 26. There were local pigs, locally grown sides and locally brewed beer, plus local music. Rain forced this year’s event to sheltered space so it was held at the Cabbagetown Community Center, but a little rain didn’t stop everyone from getting their roast on.

Time and Place: The world through 3-D glasses

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

news_timeandplace_20

This photo was taken at the Atlanta Arts Festival at Piedmont Park. I took plenty of pictures of people looking at artwork, but the “3-D” artwork at this booth made for some especially funny and interesting images. I liked this one in particular because these three people came together and made this perfect symmetry in the frame for just a couple of seconds, and they all brought the glasses up to their face at the exact same time. It was one of those photographs that just fell into place right in front of me, for just long enough for me to snap a few frames. I also thought the lack of context makes the image kind of confusing and funny.

Photo of the Day: Critical Mass

Saturday, August 1st, 2009

Every last Friday of the month, cyclists gather at Woodruff Park to ride through the streets of Atlanta en masse. Frequently causing major traffic angst and inspiring curses from the cars of road warriors hurrying home or to happy hour, it is always a sight to see and a source of pride for the huge cyclist community of the city.

Time and Place: The Dirty Truth

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009

I took this photograph at the Audacity of Hoops event, organized by the Dirty Truth Campaign, which took place July 25 at a public park in Mechanicsville. The purpose of the event was to bring together the community — especially youth — to rally behind the cause of cleaning up the neighborhoods near Turner Field, whose empty lots and abandoned buildings attract crime and drugs. The photograph was taken just before the first basketball game of the tournament that was held at the park. A member of the Dirty Truth Campaign had just given the two teams an overview of the rules and then had them put their hands in before the game. He must have heard me snapping away as fast as my camera would go because after the first one, he had them put their hands in a second time, presumably realizing too that it was a good shot. This was my favorite picture I took at the event because to me it symbolizes unity and the coming together of the kids in the community to get behind a common cause.
