Fired Atlanta arborist gets a blog

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

The blog, “Holding Atlanta City Government Accountable,” isn’t written by Tom Coffin, the arborist who was fired by the city for working too hard, but by fellow tree lovers in Atlanta who are keeping watch on the ongoing investigation into his ouster. It’ll include documents related to Coffin’s firing, news stories and information about suspicious tree removals.

Check it out here.

Decatur Blog Festival

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

scalzi2.jpgThanks to the Decatur Book Festival and Dragon*Con, writers will be descending upon Atlanta like a horde of Visigoths this Labody Day Weekend. In advance of two of my favorite local events, in the Arts section this week, the story “Books vs. Blogs” explores the virtues and pitfalls of author’s blogs. Since so many writers have blogs, the story focused on a few noteworthy examples, including science fiction author John Scalzi and his popular, 10 year-old old blog  Whatever (anthologized in the upcoming volume Your Hate Mail Will Be Graded); horror novelist Cherie Priest and her Livejournal blog; and cartoonist Rich Tommaso’s Seattle Sketchbook.

Since there are soooo many author’s blogs out there, I won’t claim to offer a complete list of blogging guests of the Decatur Book Festival, let alone Dragon*Con, but here’s a few interesting ones. If you have suggestions of the “How dare you not include this one!” variety, please offer them in the comments field. (No, really.)

Political blogger Andre Walker’s conflict of interest?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

SEE UPDATE here.

A leading Georgia political blogger is being accused of conflicts of interest for doing work for politicians and failing to disclose it. The issue raises a couple of broader questions about ethical standards for political bloggers.

Atlanta Progressive News released an investigative article early this morning that details work done by Georgia Politics Unfiltered’s Andre Walker for U.S. Senate candidate Vernon Jones and incumbent Congressman David Scott, as well as a long list of favorable posts on Scott.
