New Year’s Eve cover contest

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Creative Loafing’s on the lookout for some party pics to be featured in our New Year’s Eve Guide Dec. 17. Anything that captures the essence of New Year’s Eve is fair game — Magic Markered declarations lovingly bestowed on faces, the classic couch pass-out, amusingly bad acrobatic endeavors, whatever. As long as it tells a New Year’s Eve story, we’re listening. If we like your image, we’ll slap it on CL’s cover.

Check out our You Shoot page for details on how to submit your images.

Come one, come all to the CL art show!

Wednesday, August 27th, 2008

We’re hosting an art show to show off all the fabulous winners of our first ever You Shoot contest. Why? Because we love you.

And you should love us back by attending on August 28 and checking out both the Flickr group members’ stunning images and CL staffers’ artwork.

Check out the ad below for more info.

We’ll see you there. Or else.

This week’s Flickr winner

Friday, June 20th, 2008

This week’s CL Flickr contest winner is ~bellatopia~, for this photo of a man seated on a milk crate in Atlanta Old Fourth Ward neighborhood. We (me and Tara-Lynne Pixley) like it for the composition and the tone.

4th Ward

For her effort, ~bellatopia~ wins a new car, or tickets to see moe., whichever costs us less.

Wait.

I just checked.

It’s the tickets.

This week’s CL YouShoot Flickr photo contest winner is this beauty-from-the-mundane snap of shoes on a wire by Flickr user eye3cee.

There’s a common thread among our winners. We like photos that find beauty in, or cause us to look twice at run-of-the-mill Atlanta things. I’ve seen more sneakers tossed over power lines than I can count. But I don’t think I’ve ever stopped and stared like this photographer did. Next time I will.

Keep submitting photos to our group. There’s another prize next week.

This week’s CL YouShoot Flickr photo contest winner is this snap of City Hall East by Flickr user soufwess.

City Hall East

It’s a gorgeous photo that will make me look up next time I’m drive down Ponce. If I rear-end someone’s car, I’m suing soufwesss.

For endangered motorists and pedestrians, soufwesss has won two tickets to see R.E.M. at Lakewood Amphitheatre on Saturday, June 21.

Keep submitting photos to our group. There’s another prize next week.

This week we have the first monthly winner as well as our weekly winner.

Tajphotog wins the weekly prize (IMAX tickets) with this fashion photo.

flickr1.jpg

I know your first thought is probably “they chose that photo because it’s got a bunch of Creative Loafing papers as the background!” I assure you this is entirely not the case. I didn’t even notice that’s what it was until after I’d chosen the photo. And then I figured it was equally ridiculous to NOT pick what I deemed the best photo just because of that. So, there you go. Feel free to argue.

The lighting is understated, the concept is minimal and yet the effect is anything but. Tajphotog presents a fashionable capture in a simplistic way and it stands out. I like. It is a little different from the Atlanta building/skyline/hotspot pics we’ve been seeing up on the group but many of those are so equally stunning it’s becoming difficult to pick just one.

The monthly prize (Braves tickets) goes to kajatl. He uploaded 6 photos we were able to use on our Urban Explorer site and 119 total images to the group.

Thanks for all the photos guys. You’re making this group amazing. We have one more month of this contest so keep ‘em coming!

Oakland cemetary hdr 2

This photo was taken by Flickr user PhotoColletta nearly a month before a tornado tore through Oakland Cemetery, severely damaging tombs and gravestones, and closing the park to unescorted visitors. It’s ostensibly a graveyard photo, but in my mind it’s really a sky photo. The clouds look weaved together.

Please keep the photos coming. We’ll pick another weekly winner next week. Also, the Creative Loafing Atlanta Flickr Group member who submits the most photos to the group before the end of the month also wins a nice prize.

Another week, another CL You Shoot photo contest winner

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Bragging is tacky, I know, but the CL You Shoot Flickr photo contest has been a smashing success. 40 new members have uploaded hundreds of great photos in just two weeks.

This week’s contest winner is mateofiero’s lovely snap of two smokers in Little Five Points.

passing

The photo was apparently a happy accident. He was trying to take a photo of the woman when the man walked into the the frame.

You know, my only sibling is seven years older than me. I’m a happy accident, too.

So, mateofiero, contact me at andisheh at creativeloafing.com and come claim your prize — tickets and VIP to the 11th Annual Country Fair this weekend at Lakewood, and four tickets to Center For Puppetry Arts.

Keep the photos coming. There’s another prize for our favorite photo next week, and a prize in two weeks for the person who adds the most photos during the month that can be used with Urban Explorer listings.

Radiohead tickets for this week’s CL You Shoot photo contest winner

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

The response to our CL You Shoot Flickr photo contest has been somewhere between very whelming and overwhelming. There are dozens of great photos of Atlanta in our Flickr group now, thanks to you.

This week’s winner is Flickr user rblairg for this moody, b&w shot of the Midtown skyline taken in Piedmont Park.

piedmont

Not only is it the most artful and original take on the most popular subject in our Flickr group thus far (skylines), but Piedmont Park is also one of our Urban Explorer picks for Midtown.

rblairg, to reward your awesomeness, there are two Radiohead tickets and a VIP parking pass on my desk for you. Please come get them before one of my co-workers hits me over the head and steals them.

We’ll announce another winner next Wednesday, so keep submitting your Atlanta photos. A hint from one of the judges — we’re going to try to pick a photo next week with people in it.

CL Flickr: Prizes for your photos

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Since the tornado in March, activity on our Flickr group has spontaneously increased.

Readers and CL employees have been uploading all sorts of Atlanta-themed photos, including artfully composed architecture shots, cheap-and-amusing-ish cell phone snaps, and, mysteriously, an 18 month-old behind-the-scenes photo from the set of a Nelly video filmed in East Point.

We very much enjoy the photos you’re contributing to CL’s Flickr group, so starting today we’re going to encourage you to contribute mo’ and mo’ better photos by offering you VALUABLE PRIZES!!!

Here’s how this bribery contest is gonna work.

1. Join CL’s Flickr group.

2. Upload to the group your photos of street scenes, restaurants, clubs, bars, galleries, funny signs, parks, events — especially places and things mentioned on the Urban Explorer Web site. We want to see Atlanta through your eyes.

3. Every Wednesday, we’ll award a prize (tickets to something) to the person who took our favorite photo during the previous week.

4. At the end of May, we’ll give a prize (also tickets) to the person who uploaded the most Atlanta photos to the group.

Any questions? E-mail me (andisheh at creativeloafing.com), call (404-614-1888), or leave them in the comments.

Commence shootin’.
