— It’s Veteran’s Day tomorrow, which is set aside to honor the men and women who have put their lives on the line on our country’s behalf. Call a vet  and thank them for their sacrifices. At the Daly Briefing, our intrepid correspondent is back in the U.S. from Iraq. But he’s stuck in Kansas because of military bureaucracy. And will be stuck there a day longer because … well, federal offices are closed because it’s Veteran’s Day. Patience, patience.

— Strong words from Erick at Peach Pundit, who is tired of hearing Johnny Mac’s folks whine about the shortcomings of Caribou Barbie. After all, they’re the ones who plucked her out of a moose hunt to be the next vice-president, right? Erick is so pissed off that he has a petition to make Republicans who bash Palin official political lepers.

— The Republican Party is obviously in trouble and Newt Gingrich has volunteered to be the savior. DownRight is down with that notion, but not the idea that the party has to become more moderate. They argue that Johnny Mac ran as a moderate and lost, which is evidence the party has to turn even harder right. But, listen, don’t forget Newt has this little issue with, you know, family values.

Left On Lanier also delves into the Republican Party’s post-election tug-of-war and points out that for the far-right wing, even Fox News has become too liberal.

— Georgia’s U.S. Senate run-off will be under the national spotlight. At Georgia Women Vote, Amy takes note that unmarried women came out strong for J-Mart and Obama. Will they come back for the run-off?

— And, finally, there can’t be a worse feeling in journalism than to pursue a story, miss it, and then see a competitor nail it. Live Apartment Fire follows the tale of the two Atlanta garbage men who chill out in East Point while collecting OT, and how WSB trumped WGCL in the local television news wars. But that doesn’t erase the fact that WGCL still has its ace in the hole: Dagmar Midcap.

— Amy and Lauren are in Denver and blogging from the convention on Georgia Women Vote. They were both moved by a speech U.S. Rep. John Lewis gave this morning to the Georgia and Alabama delegations. Lewis will address the nation tonight before Obama accepts his party’s nomination.

— One person not at the convention is WXIA-TV’s political reporter Denis O’Hayer. As Live Apartment Fire notes, while the Democratic Party goes all historic on us O’Hayer was covering a tree that fell on the house. I’m personally disappointed that WGCL-TV didn’t send Dagmar Midcap to Denver. After all, they seem to have her everywhere else.

ATLmalcontent has a complaint of a different nature. He’s also watching the convention on television and thinks the three major cable news channels have pretty much dropped all traces of objectivity — they all seem to have a horse in this race.

— Dcup at Politits isn’t in Denver either, but at least that has left her time to bake a very special cake in honor of Hillary. Yum!

— She obviously gave DriftGrift a slice because he has a sizzling Hillary-related “Morning Wooten” for our viewing pleasure.

— And finally, two very different MARTA experiences to share. Jamsmooth writes about a jamming smooth ride. But over at Arc of Time, a loud snorer and the shooting downtown almost sent their bus going the wrong way down I-20.

— As the fall campaign season goes into full swing, Travis over at Lucid Idiocy notes that one reason voters are so cynical is because of all the lies, lies, lies that candidates expect us to swallow. When Paris Hilton becomes a political voice of reason, we know something’s drastically wrong.

— For most of us, the Olympic Games have devolved into another made-for-television event that is very easy to ignore. Juliana at Blog For Democracy reminds us of one of the reasons the 2008 Summer Olympics still matter. Hankies not provided.

— Another heartwarming moment comes from the Daly Briefing, where our intrepid correspondent in Iraq gets a care package from home, and it’s all about the Orange Monkeys.

— And yet another tug on the heart string from Live Apartment Fire, which discovered a video deep on the WGCL-TV website. It’s “The Evan Thomason Show,” a spoof on TV news that runs nearly 15 minutes and features a kid who is too adorably cute. Turns out the Make-A-Wish Foundation sent him to do a newscast at the station. The video is funny, it has a Dagmar Midcap sighting and hats off to the News 46 staff for being such good sports. In Evan, a new television star is born.

— The very-much-missed Atlanta song siren Kelly Hogan, who’s now living in Chicago, turned me on to Blossom Dearie many years ago. At Cable & Tweed, Rich notes that it’s the 50th anniversary of the jazz singer’s best album. And Kelly, won’t you please come home?

GriftDrift explains why he hates liberals, but really f*cking hates Republicans. His grumpiness is for our reading pleasure.

— And Jason Pye is grumpy with CNN’s Lou Dobbs, who was grumpy on the air about our economy and the free-market. Pye’s point? Dobbs really doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

— Has the “silly season” in Georgia politics officially opened? Andre over at Georgia Politics Unfiltered certainly thinks so. Exhibit No. 1 is an email from the Vernon Jones campaign that lashes out at Jim Martin for having “voted against Barack Obama” in the primary (Martin supported John Edwards for president). And, yes, this is the same Vernon Jones who twice voted for our current Republican president. Yep. Silly season is definitely here.

— How many times did Dagmar Midcap appear on yesterday’s hour-long 4 o’clock newscast on WGCL-TV? Thankfully, our friends at Live Apartment Fire counted them. Our favorite: a lingering shot of Dagmar dramatically looking down (presumably at a weather radar) and tracking Hurricane Dolly. Glad she’s on the case. The answer is eight, by the way.

— The folks at the Wren’s Nest take us through their day, including the woman in the nightgown who sleeps in her car and parks it in their driveway.

— Over at Ashes and Glass, Sara celebrates the first day of vacation by sleeping late. Ah, the luxury.

— Ah, a post-election hangover kind of day. As a break from the political winds, the folks over at Chicken Fat posted some recently-discovered photos of Willie B., the iconic gorilla that was the public face of Zoo Atlanta for most of his life. And, of course, he was named after former Atlanta Mayor William B. Hartsfield.

Peach Pundit has a round-up on the straw poll offered to Gwinnett County voters. One of the questions, whether MARTA should be extended to our neighbors to the north, was overwhelmingly shot down; 62 percent said no a split decision: 62 percent of the Republicans said no, 72 percent of the Dems said yes. My favorite question: Has the Republican Party moved too far to the left? Just over 57 percent said it has, but surely some of those are goofs from Democratic voters messing with the Republicans.

— As Live Apartment Fire notes, it was not a good day for former television reporters. Dale Cardwell, who used to be at WSB-TV, finished 3rd in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate. And Steen Miles, once a reporter at WXIA-TV, finished out of the running for DeKalb CEO. Miles, by the way, was listed on the ballot as Steen “Newslady” Miles.

— For the best “quote of the night” check out Georgia Politics Unfiltered. It’s a doozy.

— OK, enough about the election. The folks over at Moisten Manapkin were watching a movie and discovered that WGCL-TV hottie Dagmar Midcap is an actress in her spare time. Which gives me the excuse to use this link again.

— Can food be an aphrodisiac? That question is pondered over at Blog d’Elisson and inspired by a visit to the Waffle House in Temple, Ga. And who said inspiration can’t come in strange places?

What about Dagmar?

Saturday, May 31st, 2008

My friend Rodney Ho wrote a nice story in the AJC yesterday about the growing popularity of WGCL-TV weatherwoman Dagmar Midcap.

Why is Midcap a hit with viewers?

The auburn-haired Vancouver native possesses a soothing voice, a pretty face and a warm personality.

True.

There’s also this. And this. And don’t forget this.

Oh, and these.
