Gone With the Wind regains non-existent title

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Using a sophisticated statistical analysis technique called arithmetic, Bloomberg calculates 1939’s Gone With the Wind is the top-grossing movie of all time.

In recent years, the 1997 slapstick comedy romantic epic Titanic has been widely thought of as Hollywood’s biggest all-time earner.

But apparently it recently occurred to someone at Bloomberg that 1997 dollars were worth considerably less than 1939 dollars. A little bit of adjustment for inflation and, voila, Titanic drops from first-place to sixth-place on the all-time box office list.
