Best of Atlanta voting party tomorrow!

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Cast your vote on all the grit and glitz that make this town so filthy rich when Creative Loafing hosts the Best of Atlanta Voting Party tomorrow (Thurs., July 23). Dead Confederate’s Hardy Morris unveils his new side project, and Attractive Eighties Women get the party started with a set of rousing anthems that draw from equal parts Lenny Bruce impious humor-made-local, and the power-trash jams of the Replacements circa ‘83. It’ll be a night that’s sure to scuff the pages of history books in the dirty and decadent big apple of the South.

Don’t forget to vote — onsite at the party, or at clatl.com/bestofatlanta.

$5 (admission includes beverage and food samples from Ru San’s, the Real Chow Baby, Mediterranean Grill, Widmer Brother’s Beer, Ozeki Sake and more). 9 p.m. The Masquerade, 695 North Ave. 404-577-8178. masq.com.

Fire at the Masquerade extinguished

Sunday, July 5th, 2009

A fire that ignited outside Atlanta’s Masquerade Music Park Saturday night has been extinguished, with no reported injuries. The fire did destroy a storage space separate from the music venue.

Around 10 p.m., three Atlanta Fire Department engines responded to the venue’s open-air music park.

Witnesses said they walked outside to find plumes of smoke billowing from the the rear of the venue. Another witness standing in a nearby parking lot said he saw smoke as well. He said he walked to the rear of the venue and found flames had already engulfed trees and were spreading to nearby booths.

Firefighters managed to contain the blaze to a fenced-in area that stored portable toilets. All of those toilets — an estimated 20 — appeared to be destroyed.

The main venue, which tonight was hosting a punk rock showcase, was not impacted.

Firefighters did not immediately know what caused the fire. The fire, witnesses said, appeared to have started in the portable toilet storage area.

CL attempted to take a photo of the damage but was told by firefighters we were not appropriately dressed to enter the scene. You know, because of the contents of the burnt portable toilets and the fact that we were in sandals. Tessa from Drive a Faster Car has Twitter pics of the blaze.

CAFÉ TACUBA LAST THURSDAY AT MASQUERADE: One of the band’s less-enthusiastic fans

Even by the Masquerade’s high standards, the audience at Mexican quartet Café Tacuba’s one-night stand last Thursday was wildly enthusiastic. From dancing and cheering loudly for more than two hours, to rushing the stage, grabbing the microphone and shouting out lyrics while lead singer Ruben Ortega smiled approvingly, the band’s audience proved its devotion for all things Tacuba.

The Mexican quartet didn’t disappoint, either, offering up a poptastic mash embracing alternative-rock, ska and punk, while referencing Depeche Mod’s “Policy of Truth” and the Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows.” The band’s misstep: not setting up a merchandise table so fans could buy T-shirts and copies of its new CD, Sino. It would have made a killing that night.
