Post-277

Share your Pride with the world … or at least all of Atlanta.

We’re looking for your photos from this week’s Pride festivities. Send them to pridephotos@creativeloafing.com, and we will feature them in our Pride photo gallery at clatl.com/photos. We’ll be at the festival Saturday and Sunday, too, so stop by the Creative Loafing booth and we’ll see you this weekend.

Atlanta’s Iran protests, up close

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

Organized hastily, primarily via Facebook, hundreds gathered over the weekend in front of the CNN center to express their displeasure with the Iranian government’s violent reactions to demonstrators protesting the results of the recent Iranian elections.

The AJC, while calling attention to burnings of the Iranian flag and photos of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, provided a basic profile of the organizers and attendees:

Most of the crowd consisted of Iranians living in the U.S. Many carried signs and placards reading “Where is my vote,” “Free Iran” and “Stop the violence,” the Associated Press reported.

The rally was organized by a group of Iranian students living in Atlanta, the Associated Press reported. The organizers said they do not support any candidate or political party in the Iranian elction and that the rally was endorsed by Amnesty International.

CL staff photographer Joeff Davis was at Saturday’s demonstration. And his shots show a mixed crowd, with assorted aims and inspirations.

Time and Place: Big/Little

This wildly efficient (Smart?) car was sandwiched between a semi and The Varsity, well known as being the largest fast-food restaurant in the world. I doubt the irony would escape anyone, but I’m sure we could all learn a big somethin’ from the little guy.

Time and Place: Traffic trials

web-_09.jpg

This week’s Time and Place photograph was shot at the corner of Piedmont and
Pharr roads. An accident had just occurred before I arrived at the
intersection and I shot this photograph through my windshield. For me, this
image is powerful because I can identify with the woman on the cell phone.
She seems to be saying, “Oh shit!” I know that feeling and I know that
expression. Driving around Atlanta on a daily basis I am shocked by the
number of accidents I see. It is unbelievable. Being a newcomer myself,
Atlanta roads are incredibly perplexing and they don’t seem to be designed
with safety in mind. Exits off intersections are confusing and streets
change names constantly. Every single day, sometimes twice a day, I pass an
intersection with a person on their cell phone with this exact same
expression. Slow down people, look both ways and be careful out there!

And the weekly CL Flickr contest winner is . . .

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

This week’s CL YouShoot Flickr photo contest winner is this beauty-from-the-mundane snap of shoes on a wire by Flickr user eye3cee.

There’s a common thread among our winners. We like photos that find beauty in, or cause us to look twice at run-of-the-mill Atlanta things. I’ve seen more sneakers tossed over power lines than I can count. But I don’t think I’ve ever stopped and stared like this photographer did. Next time I will.

Keep submitting photos to our group. There’s another prize next week.

Time and Place: Kid’s-eye view

Children can be counted on for many things. At 9 am on any given morning, they will be bright-eyed (at least far more so than most adults). They will respond to whatever life throws their way with absolute honesty, be it expressing unadulterated joy at riding a bright orange train in a circle or registering confusion for the stranger pointing her camera out said train’s window. Most importantly, children can be counted on to bring a light to any situation and make tarnished things shiny, make the mundane beautiful.

That was my experience at the opening of the Thomas (the tank engine NOT the train) and Friends area at Six Flags over Georgia last Saturday. Parents stood in waiting, watching their kids experience the garish colors and exaggerated cartoon faces of a sparklingly new train-inspired playground. Maybe they were all thinking the same thing I was: that life comes at you fast and if only I could remember what it was like to be blissed out on a 3-times-around-in-a-circle toy train ride…

Life in the balance: Troy Davis

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

On May 17, the NAACP and Amnesty International jointly sponsored a rally to bring awareness to the cause of Troy Davis. Emotional loved ones and supporters gathered to try saving the life of a man they all believe to be innocent.
