Five years ago this week: Kerry v. Nader

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Back in late February, 2004, the Democrats were busy fielding candidates for what — for them — would be a deflating presidential election. Sen. John Kerry was eying ex-nominee Howard Dean’s base of grassroots supporters — and was bracing himself against the threat that was Ralph Nader.

In a short chat with CL, Kerry had this to say in the Feb. 26, 2004, issue of the Loaf

Kerry in Atlanta: ‘Let’s not eat our own’

Hours after Ralph Nader threw his hat back into the ring, Democratic front-runner John Kerry insisted he’s the best choice for reform-minded voters.

“I’m going to speak to Naderites [and] to people who supported Howard Dean,” Kerry said in a brief interview with Creative Loafing in Atlanta. “I intend to speak to those folks. I think my career speaks to them.”

Morning headlines

Monday, April 7th, 2008

FEUD FOR THOUGHT: GOP infighting led to major bills such as transportation funding sine dying on the vine Friday. But don’t worry; at least now you can bring your guns on MARTA. Click here to read Thomas’ sine die live blog.

BOB BARR: Forms presidential exploratory committee, indicating he’s seriously considering running against Ralph Nader for general-election spoiler.

WWE AND HGH: Homeowner discovers HGH in his Locust Grove house, which once belonged to a pro wrestler, FOX 5 reports. I’m also amused to see a pro wrestling newsletter covering HGH abuse, which is like a soap opera magazine covering cosmetic surgery.

IMMIGRATION: Gwinnett prisons begin screening inmates for immigration violations, and AccessNorthGa is on the case with an adrenaline-pumping news graphic.

CLAYTON SCHOOLS: Things have been better.

BMW CARAVAN: Two hundred seventy-one bored, rich people drive from Chateau Elan to Atlanta Raceway in Braselton in not only the Guinness world-record longest caravan of BMWs, but cars in general.

CROSS-DRESSING THE LINE? Wisconsin elementary school holds dress-up day for kids to either dress as senior citizens or members of the opposite sex, an idea the kids came up with. Christian talk radio hears about the tiny trannies, though, and goes on an angry mission of talking.

Atlanta blogs today: Common ground on sex crimes

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Maybe Nader just needs one big group hug to validate his role in American politics. After the hug, maybe someone should also slap him on the back of the head and ask “WTF??”

– Bernita on Blog for Democracy, reacting to a Washington Post article stating that Ralphie Boy is suing the Democratic National Committee for challenging his ballot status in 2004. Oh, and apparently Nader hasn’t ruled out a 2008 run.

Yep…today is Halloween; the day where kids dress up in costumes and beg their neighbors for candy. Today also marks the day when actors John Candy & Michael Landon, DeKalb County CEO Vernon Jones, Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Lowe, CBS reporter Dan Rather, and myself were born.

– Andre, the true blue (dog) Democrat at Georgia Politics Unfiltered, who, upon realizing he has something in common with Mr. CEO, asks, “Are you scared yet?”

Wilson and Craig, both have a new-found appreciation for the power of sex crime laws to reach out and touch you in ways you never imagined (no pun intended). Both have an understanding of how important judges and their discretion are in dispensing justice. Both wanted a second chance. One won. One lost–or at least so far.

– OK, so What is Goin’ On actually posted this earlier this week, but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to spotlight a post titled “What Do Larry Craig and Genarlow Wilson Have in Common?”
