Sarah Palin’s Checkers speech

Friday, September 5th, 2008

A Republican war hero picks an inexperienced right-winger as his running mate.

Questions quickly arise about the upstart VP candidate’s qualifications, and a scandal gets national media attention. But the running mate wows the party’s conservative base with a scrappy televised speech, turning the table with attacks on Democrats and the media.

Sound familiar? Yeah, I’m talking about Richard Nixon.

There are remarkable parallels between Nixon’s famous “Checkers speech,” which saved his spot alongside Ike in 1952, and Sarah Palin’s speech at the Republican convention, which … well, which may have done the same thing for her. Here’s one of the speeches:

I know that this is not the last of the smears. In spite of my explanation tonight, other smears will be made. Others have been made in the past. And the purpose of the smears, I know, is this, to silence me, to make me let up. Well, they just don’t know who they are dealing with. (more…)

Soapbox: Palin takes the stage

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

Zac Farber, a junior at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn., gives his impressions of the on-going Republican National Convention.

Hurricane Gustav subsided, the Republicans were able to step off the political tightrope of balancing convention festivities with catastrophe sympathies Wednesday night and turn their efforts toward calming the storm surrounding their vice presidential nominee, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska.

The Republicans tried to turn Palin’s string of scandals—firing a state trooper, soliciting pork for her hometown, mothering a pregnant 17-year-old—into minor peccadilloes.

In an effort to quash the media frenzy, Bristol Palin was offered as a sacrifice to the eager cameras. The teen posed with a baby (her mother’s), a fiancé (her own) and the wholesome Cindy McCain, providing photographic evidence that the Palins are a happy family. (more…)

The RNC is going strong now that weather patterns are no longer an issue. Also going strong are the multiple Palin controversies. But that didn’t stop the Republican VP candidate from presenting a speech invigorating to both right-wingers and the media.

Is it 1980?

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

Just listened to Mitt “the Mittstigator” Romney’s speech and the Republican National Convention. He said something like: “We need change alright. We need to change from a liberal Washington to a conservative Washington.”

Wait a sec. I’m confused. Fourteen years of a Republican Congress (out of the last 16), and eight years of Bush as president. Were they liberals?

John McCain convention parties

Friday, August 22nd, 2008

James from ArcOfTime popped my Obama bubble in a previous post’s comments and reminded me that there are indeed parties planned in the metro Atlanta area to watch John McCain speak at the Republican National Convention.

Click here to see all the McCain events within a 100-mile radius of CL’s Communist stronghold. (I tried 25 miles first, but that zone was blue as blue as can be. Y’all deserve options!)

And as a sidenote to James’ comment that there are only five Republican Fresh Loaf readers — please, my right-leaning friends, do not be afraid to speak up. Criticize us, malign our views, insult our intelligence(s). But remember: At the end of the day, we can do more together than we can apart. Vaya con Dios, pachyderms!
