Streetalk: How has Paul McCartney influenced you?

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

Crab Louie: I played music before I understood the Beatles. Once I got the Beatles, understood the musicianship, it was easily a redefinition of my approach to crafting songs, to instrumentation, to you name it. Even my bass playing. White folks never heard bass being played like that. [It was] nothing short of a complete overhaul of my understanding of how I should approach the instrument and engage the public. I prefer John Lennon as a songwriter, but I can’t help but show love for Paul McCartney. Favorite Beatles song: “Mother Nature’s Son.”

Lauren: He’s pretty much affected any modern musician. His involvement with the Beatles paved the way for all different kinds of experimental music. I actually play metal. He paved the way for people like Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin and everybody after him. He’s pretty much the predecessor for everything. And I look at him for more than music, too, in terms of him trying to lead an ecological life. He’s a vegetarian. He’s really a great person, musically and ethically, too. Favorite Beatles song: “Eleanor Rigby.”

Kevin: His bass playing was so original. You will hear that bass melody inside the song itself. It’s melody inside another melody. Fantastic. In most songs, the bass is in the background. They’re the rhythm section. With McCartney, the bass makes a lot of those Beatles songs. The refrain with “Lucy in the Sky [with Diamonds],” it’s all the bass. In “Come Together,” it’s the sliding bass that really captures it. He just didn’t play a bass note, he put a whole melody right into the song. I always think how can I make a bass line really carry a song. Favorite Beatles song: “I’m Looking Through You.”

Player’s Club: The Beatles: Rock Band to be released on 9/9/09

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

A Beatles-centric Rock Band game was announced last fall, but until this morning there’d been very little concrete information from anybody involved. The Beatles: Rock Band is the official title. It hits America Sept. 9 both as a stand-alone disc and in full instrument bundles for the Wii, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Those whose living rooms are already cluttered with fake plastic instruments will be happy to hear that all Rock Band and Guitar Hero World Tour peripherals will work with the game. No word yet on a track list, but I’m pretty sure “Revolution #9″ won’t make the cut.

From the press release:

The Beatles: Rock Band will allow fans to pick up the guitar, bass, mic or drums and experience The Beatles extraordinary catalogue of music through gameplay that takes players on a journey through the legacy and evolution of the band’s legendary career. In addition, The Beatles: Rock Band will offer a limited number of new hardware offerings modeled after instruments used by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr throughout their career.

Today is Beatles Day in Atlanta!

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Greg G. — he of Atlanta Time Machine fame, I believe — has an interesting post at WFMU’s site:

Back in 1965, the city of Atlanta declared August 18th Beatle Day in anticipation of the band’s impending arrival.  For their show that night at Atlanta Stadium, the city attempted to avoid vehicular gridlock by setting up a special shuttle bus route.  Concert-goers could hop aboard a “Beatle Bus” in the heart of downtown and get dropped off at the stadium.Best of all, though, were the ads the city placed in an effort to persuade attendees to board the shuttle.  Whoever the bus driver in this ad was, he was obviously one hell of a good sport to don a Beatle wig and pose for this unforgettable photo.

Visit the site to see the awkward advertisement.
