Catch it if you can: Flight of the Conchords’ ‘Too Many D**** on the Dance Floor’

Monday, February 16th, 2009

The sophomore season of “Flight of the Conchords,” HBO’s comedy series about “New Zealand’s fourth most popular folk-parody duo,” has been a little spotty but made an uproariously funny return to form last night. Directed by Michel Gondry, the episode riffed hilariously on the rivalry between New Zealand and Australia (does one even exist?), but the highlight was the introductory musical number at a dance club. It’s the like one of those unbelievably raunchy but undeniably catchy tracks laid down by Andy Samberg’s The Lonely Island, like “D*** in a Box” or “J*** in My Pants.” (I think they’re funnier with asterisks than spelled out.) The clip even features a cameo from one of the Village People — but watch it while you can, because it’s the kind of video that will probably get taken down and put back up elsewhere until an “official” viral version gets released.

Incidentally, Jemaine Clement and Bret Mckenzie will be bringing their Conchords musical-comedy act to Atlanta’s Fox Theatre on April 11.

MARTA mugging victim fights back … now on YouTube

Friday, February 6th, 2009

First there was “Soulja Girl.” Now, meet “mugging gone wrong.”

A video in which a young man in a MARTA station appears to turn the tables on a would-be mugger is the latest slice of drama to hit YouTube. Early in the morning on May 3, 2008, a station security camera captured the following footage (I’ve loaded the victim’s video of the event, which includes his comments):

After the jump, some details about the video.

Viral videos of ‘08 mark resurgence of the novelty song

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

A side effect of the popularity of viral videos is a renaissance in the novelty song. The increased professionalism of Youtube-able film clips has meant that musical parodies and other comedy songs have increased in both quality and variety while finding bigger audiences thanks to blogs and social networking sites. Here are five of 2008’s definitive musical videos that didn’t involve a cat flushing a toilet.

1. “I’m F***ing Matt Damon”

The “Digital Shorts” of “Saturday Night Live” specialize in NSFW music video parodies like the recent “J*** in my Pants.” (I use asterisks because the clips are probably funnier when the swears are bleeped out.) None has bettered shock comic Sarah Silverman and her musical prank on her boyfriend, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. “I’m F***ing Matt Damon” has catchy hooks that make it fun listening, despite being the most inappropriate break-up song imaginable. Kimmel’s response, “I’m F***ing Ben Affleck” built to a “We Are The World”-style chorus and proved nearly as funny, but the joke was officially exhausted when Elizabeth Banks sang yet another version, “I’m F***ing Seth Rogen,” to promote Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno. Unfortunately named Atlanta businesses #1,388

Three Girls and a Needle in Ellenwood. (It’s a small town in Clayton County.)

Why so unfortunate? Well, don’t click this link and read about an infamous Internet video if you are a.) eating b.) eating ice cream or c.) hoping to preserve your innocence.

But I’m sure the gals do good work. If you’re down there and looking for their services, give ‘em a look.
