Headlining Wild Bill’s Fight Night, Darrell Parodi battles for MMA, the Marine Corp and The Tots

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Marine and MMA FIghter Darrell ParodiDarrell Parodi (1-0) is not your typical fighter. Sure, he’s got tattoos and even a strong physique, but there’s a hidden stream of inner courage masked behind his contrasting personality of friendliness and polite demeanor.

When approached and spoken to, the young active duty Marine is collected and respectful almost to the point where thoughts of him fighting in a ring or a battlefield seem a bit out of character. Parodi casts a bright aura of gentleness. But just below any glow of calm lays a warrior at heart.

Parodi’s outward peacefulness and main street sensibility in itself is one quality that separates the young soldier from the much of the often flamboyant mixed martial arts pack. But there’s much more to Parodi. Far more than just some brutish aptitude or unflinching nerves.

As an athlete, Parodi battles within the tough blue-collar ranks of MMA around the southern United States. But as a Marine rifleman, the young MMA fighter and family man also fights for his country. Parodi may not be a household name of the UFC, but like thousands of other young Americans, he bravely faces the uncertainty of life in combat overseas during a time of war.

“I am going to Iraq the first week of January and will be deployed for twelve months,” Parodi told Full Contact Talk. “I have never been deployed to Iraq before. I joined the Marine Corp in 2003 and then I spent my first year in Okinawa. From there I was stationed in Atlanta and that’s where I started training MMA.”

Many people might assume that the uncertainty of war would provide a reasonable level of fear amongst the toughest guys in the world. Even that of a Marine or a professional fighter. But for Darrell Parodi, the reality of his upcoming mixed martial arts bout at Wild Bill’s 19 December in Duluth is an exciting and honorable prelude to the quickly approaching reality of life in a war zone.

“I am so glad I was called me to fight,” Parodi happily stated. “I wasn’t going to fight so close to my deployment because it takes a lot of time away from my wife and my family. Parodi continued, “But when I heard the fight was for “Toys For Tots,” I couldn’t pass it up. It’s too good an opportunity for me to give back and also represent the Marine Corp.”

Wild Bill’s Fight Night 17, breaks the barrier of a traditional mixed martial arts event. The night of professional and amatuer fights is being billed as “A Fight For Charity,” where admission is free as long as fans show up to the doors with a toy or drop a gift off at one of over thirty Marine Corp distribution points around the city of Atlanta.

“Toys For Tots” was founded in 1947 when Major William L. Hendricks, along with a small group of fellow Marines, distributed toys to less fortunate children in the Los Angeles area. In the sixty one years that have followed, the children’s charity has spread to all fifty States and placed millions of toys into the hands of deserving kids.

“Everybody always thanks me for what I have done in the military,” said Parodi. But now I can give back and be a headliner for ‘Toys For Tots.’ I can promote the event as a Marine.” Parodi continued, “I am fighting two fights for the Marines now.”

Darrell Parodi’s Marine Corp pride is second to none. When Parodi speaks about his beloved Corp, he delivers his words in the deepest tone of honor and enthusiasm. Freshly part of the Georgia professional fighter ranks, Parodi speaks in almost equal enthusiasm about the combat sport that he loves and the military branch in which he adores as a lifestyle. Parodi’s adoration of the United States Marine Corp is even more powerfully augmented when he accounts to the Corp’s support of his current fight career.

“The Marine Corp has backed me all the way. Everybody here loves the fact that I am a fighter,” stated Parodi. “I mean, what do Marines do? We fight. We are America’s fighting force. They tell me to do my best not to get hurt but they love it. Parodi continued, “The Marine Corp gives me the time I need to train and they support me thoroughly. It’s awesome.”

Currently training out of Evolution Mixed Martial Arts in North Carolina under Jeremy Owens, Parodi was first exposed to jiu-jitsu by a Marine named Chris Cunningham when stationed in Atlanta during 2003. Cunningham, a previous student of Renzo Gracie (13-6-1) in New York, eventually began instructing Parodi and a few other Marines in a makeshift program of their own.

“We had a mat room on base and couple of us guys wanted to get into jiu-jitsu, so Chris [Cunningham] started training us,” said Parodi. “It just kind of fell in play that was where I trained.”

Parodi is scheduled to face Kamrin Naville (2-3) in the main event at Wild Bill’s. Kamrin, a scrappy pro from Valdosta with an edge in experience doesn’t intimidate Parodi in the least. The young Marine feels confident in his ground skills but eager to force the stand-up game.

“I know Kamrin is a wrestler and I am expecting him to come out strong and aggressive but right now I am focused on my own game,” stated Parodi. “I wrestled all my whole life in school and then got involved in jiu-jitsu. But as soon as picked up Muay Thai, I fell in love with it. Parodi continued, “I try to keep the fights on the feet now. I am happy to fall back on the jiu-jitsu and wrestling but at the same time it is so exciting to stand up with my opponents and see who is strong and willing to take a hit and give one back.”

No matter the end result of Friday’s fight. Darrell Parodi is a working class hero with a big heart and a dedication to his Corp, that to the casual eye, exceeds normal expectations. He faces two wars within a matter of weeks and faces such challenges with a smile and a laugh. If anything, it is the unsolicited bravery of Parodi that makes general issue American boys of his kind an example of what citizenship can and possibly should be.

Wild Bill’s Fight Night 17 takes place December 19 at Wild Bill’s, 2075 Market St., Duluth, GA 30096. (678) 473-1000. Admission is free based on donation of a new unwrapped toy to the Marine Corp’s “Toys For Tos” charity.

The Curtains Close on EliteXC

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Josh Gross of Sports Illustrated reports that after barely two years of existence ProElite, Inc., notified employees and fighters Monday it was closing down shop effective immediately. EliteXC was the face of the company that also included other promotions such as King of the Cage and Rumble on the Rock. But record financial losses seem to have proved impossible for the promotion to weather even with the silver lining of high television ratings through its national television deal with CBS and a cable deal with Showtime Sports. EliteXC is still currently under investigation in the state of Florida for possible fight-rigging and corruption. One can only guess that this investigation played some sort of role in the downfall.

The Fight World at a Glance (October 3, 2008)

Friday, October 3rd, 2008

Have you missed us? Hey, everyone needs a few days of vacation from time to time. Welcome to yet another edition of Full Contact Talk’s weekly MMA summary.

EliteXC Poised for Potentially Big Television Ratings

Jared Shaw of EliteXC is seemingly celebrating the success of this weekend’s third network television installment of MMA on CBS far before the ratings have even rolled in. And honestly, if the October 4th fight card featuring Andrei Arlovski, Gina Carrano, Kimbo Slice and Ken Shamrock brings in bad numbers, it’s safe to say that EliteXC is treading on seriously thin ice. But what’s to stop positive ratings? The show is free and televised to even those people in far off places without a cable connection.

As previously reported by FCT, Shaw had some daring words for UFC President Dana White last week. In an interview with MMARated.com, Shaw stated:

This hits the mainstream, this hits the hardcore and, especially, this hits Dana White hard.”

MSNBC’s MMA Fight Weekly reports further in the following video where Dana White laughs off Jared Shaw’s words by citing the UFC as the corporate equivalent of McDonald’s fast food restaurants and mocking EliteXC’s $60 million of current debt.

MSNBC – Dana White Interview and EliteXC Breakdown Video

As harsh as I have been towards EliteXC throughout the past, I’d be a bitter man to rain on its October 4th parade. In all honesty, I am actually motivated to see this Saturday’s night of fights. Mainly for the Andrei Arlovski and Roy Nelson bout that is being co-promoted by Affliction but the welterweight championship between Champ Jake Shields and Paul Daley could also prove to be an exciting fight. So why not a promo video for the Welterweight championship?

Now back to bitterness for a moment. As long as Kimbo Slice continues to be the cash cow for EliteXC, I guess I always have a problem with the struggling MMA organization. Slice possibly has the most padded record in professional mixed-martial-arts and the marketing campaign utilized to pitch Kimbo into the living rooms of middle America is one of both genius and swindle. P.T. Barnum comes to mind. Put a freakshow up on Main Street and the masses will follow.

Ken Shamrock and Kimbo Slice Stairdown.Kimbo Slice has a 99.9% chance of knocking the old and tired shell of Ken Shamrock into the deepest sleep. It’s almost a given. Shamrock has lost his last five fights in basically the same fashion but at the same time he carries the monicker of “UFC Legend” upon his shoulders. And this is the great EliteXC sham on October 4.

Kimbo will more than likely overwhelm Shamrock with haymakers early in the first round. Then in the aftermath and celebration, EliteXC will pawn Slice off to MMA newcomers and the casual audience as a legitimate MMA contender who has disposed of two UFC fighters in his young career. But is an aging Ken Shamrock and an equally ancient Tank Abbott a contemporary representation of the UFC? How about a big, whopping “NO!”

In fairness, these easy fights are not the fault of Kimbo Slice. He’s simply riding a wave of cash and hype all the way to stardom and fame. And who can blame him? He does seem genuinely dedicated to training under MMA legend Bas Rutten and he does more than often take the high road of humbleness when in front of the media spotlight. But don’t go thinking for a moment that Rutten has not only coached Kimbo for the cage but the microphone as well. Can you imagine if Kimbo talked smack and called out legitimate champions? The backlash would rumble like the San Andreas Fault Line.

In the end, I am certain there are thousands of hardcore MMA fans hoping that Ken Shamrock will pull off an upset and derail the Kimbo Slice train. But the odds are impossibly high for such an event. Again, Shamrock has not had a good showing since possibly his fight against Limo Leopoldo at UFC 48 in 2004. But of course many analysts will argue that Shamrock has not shown respectable competitiveness since the middle of the previous decade.

Nothing is impossible as someone once said. Ken Shamrock could technically get Kimbo down and immediately go for a trademark toe hold, ankle lock or heel hook. But first he’s got to get past a swarm of fists that have proven to be his demise over the past several years. And of course, critics will yell loudly that Shamrock took the easy road out if he does catch Kimbo in any variation of the leg lock kind. So this fight is a losing scenario for Shamrock on a number of levels if the veteran does not beat Slice at his own game.

UFC Finishes 2008 With a Bang!

The UFC’s acquisition of the Pride organization in 2007 comes in handy as 2008 slowly comes to a close. Before year’s end MMA fans will be treated to a couple of Pride-era grudge matches as well as Pride-versus-UFC dream fights. UFC 92 on December 27 brings forth the rubber match between former Pride legends Quinton Jackson and Wanderlei SilvaAnd UFC 93 starts off 2009 with the same theme when former Pride champion Dan Henderson faces former UFC champion Rich Franklin. Shogun Rua meets Mark Coleman again in an attempt to avenge his controversial loss to Coleman at Pride 31 where the young Brazilian suffered a broken arm. The bad blood in the aftermath of the loss resulted in near riots from the Hammerhouse and Chute Boxe fight teams both in the ring and backstage.

Need a video reminder of this legendary feud between both Coleman and Rua’s camps?

And of course 2008 is packed with many other exciting fights from the UFC. There’s the controversial heavyweight championship bout between UFC legend Randy Couture vs. Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 on November 15th and the battle of “The Ultimate Fighter” winners for the UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 92 on December 27th when Forrest Griffin meets Rashad Evans in the Octagon.

And what would a week in review be without some cheap gossip news?

George Clooney chokes out Dean Lister.

Celebrity gossip news site TMZ.com reported this week that MMA fighter Dean Lister was choked out by George Clooney. But of course it was all in fun.

According to TMZ: “Looking like Jason Bourne’s debonair uncle, everyone’s favorite bachelor George Clooney threw a mock choke hold on mixed martial arts fighter Dean Lister during a party at the Hard Rock Hotel in San Diego last week.”

Heath was a wrestler in high school in Duluth and also practiced Brazilian jiu-jitsu in his spare time. Not to mention that he’s a very enthusiatic fan of mixed-martial-arts and often attends local fights. But until only recenly, Heath has been very sick in bed. The members of the Full Contact Talk panel invited Heath down to attend the taping of the debut podcast. Heath was pleasantly surprised when the panel awarded him with several gifts.
