Our weekly PR roundup of news that can make you snooze

August 10th, 2007 by Cliff Bostock in Food media

It’s time to go through our weekly avalanche of e-mails from the city’s PR folks, of which there are more in this city than there are lobbyists in Washington. First, we delete two-thirds of them, because they have no news worthiness at all. Then we edit out all but the so-bad-they’re-good, self-congratulatory adjectives. Here you go:

Who calls 1 a.m. late night? Atlanta’s not much of a city for late-night dining. Now, Two Urban Licks is offering a late-supper menu until midnight Monday-Thursday, until 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday and until 10 p.m. Sunday. Nothing like a lamb lollipop to wake you up at midnight. …

Do they have health insurance? The Atlanta Business Chronicle named Fifth Group Restaurants one of the “best places to work” in 2006. This is the first time a restaurant has received one of the annual awards. To celebrate, the company will give all diners at Food Studio and South City Kitchen Midtown a 25 percent discount on Tuesday, Sept. 18. That’s the discount the employees routinely receive. They’re calling it the “Eat Like You Work Here” promotion. Is 25 percent a good discount for a server? Isn’t that about equal to the usual tip? …

Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! Both locations of Morton’s are offering a limited-time special of a four-course steak and seafood dinner for two for $99. You and your cheapo dinner date get a filet each, a choice of a seafood dish, a salad and a dessert. The promotion ends Sept. 30. I know you’ve paid more to get laid. …

Minibars for social climbers: Dylan’s Candy Bar, the sweet-toothed brainchild of Ralph Lauren’s daughter Dylan, is providing sweet stuff for guest-room minibars in the Glenn Hotel on Marietta Street. …

Fashion oxymoron of the week: Piebar marks its second anniversary at 10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25, with special music from DJ Moneyshot. Guests are urged to wear their “finest polyester attire.” Specials, like two-for-one pizzas, will be available all day. Please, no Lycra in the pizza parlor. …

This actually interesting news just in from Murphy’s: “Currently, all of the organic produce served at Murphy’s comes from Indian Ridge Farm, which is located on sacred Cherokee grounds along the Chattahoochee River in North Georgia. Ed Taylor and his wife Barbara started the farm in 1994 with a holistic approach to farming and how it connects nature and mankind. They call their biodynamic farm ‘organic plus’ because of the emphasis they place on taking care of the environment. Murphy’s has an exclusive arrangement with Indian Ridge Farm, so it is the only restaurant to receive the farm’s produce.”

Good news for the soon-to-be cuckolded: Planning to tie the knot? You know, the hangman’s noose of marriage. Check out RehearsalDinnerGuide.com. You’ll find profiles of local restaurants that host rehearsal dinners. The profiles include pictures and sample menus, which can save you a lot of scouting time. In fact, it will give you time to reconsider your rash decision. …

Or you could just go to Chuck E. Cheese: Three Metrotainment restaurants are offering themed specials this month. Thursdays, 5-11 p.m., you’re urged to don urban cowboy drag and head to Cowtippers for line dancing and a special menu. Sundays, 4-8 p.m., head to Einstein’s for a tea dance. Wednesdays, starting at 5 p.m., Joe’s on Juniper celebrates Southern culture with $1 cans of PBR, moon pies, tater tots and contests of various types. …

Pimpin’ da food: “Sneak out of the office early because the Oceanaire Seafood Room has planned the perfect post-work retreat! From 3-7 p.m. every Monday through Friday, Atlanta’s hottest professionals can wind down and enjoy half-priced appetizers and raw bar specialties.” Atlanta’s “hottest professionals”? Who decided? …

May I have the envelope for the winner of the Award for Advertising Good Food with Exclamation Marks and Threats of Scarcity? It goes to Woodfire Grill!!!! “The good news ..we have SOFTSHELL CRABS again! We are anticipating an arrival of Columbia River salmon and sturgeon. Supplies have been quite tight on these items this year so ..donÂ’t miss out! Heirloom tomatoes have been absolutely spectacular this year but weÂ’’re not sure how much longer they will continue. We have been in “insalata caprese” heaven! … Even though we have had a very tough year weather-wise, our hats are off to our dedicated farmers that have really come through with exceptional produce this year, kudos!”
