Drink coffee, write, dance the tango

July 11th, 2008 by Cliff Bostock in Restaurants

During our visit to Cafe Circa last night, we noticed that Danneman’s has opened next door, in the space formerly occupied by Javaology. It’s named after the grocery store that occupied the space for many years. (See a picture here.)

Those of us who use coffee shops as offices get a special welcome from Danneman’s, according to its website:

The 2,500-sq-ft working area above Danneman’s known as “the Library” features small private workspace tables for getting down to business. The library will always be open between 9-5 everyday. Sometimes it will be open in the evenings if there are no events scheduled. If the library is in use please feel free to work downstairs.

Don’t worry if you forgot your book-bag at home, there are large jars of pencils, pens, paper clips, and note paper for a small charge, a paper cutter, and hole punch to use and even a printer/copier serving as functional art above an antique card catalog holder.

Among those events that might keep you downstairs are regular live performances of tango music, preceded by lessons. Check here for more information.

Sounds kinda wacky, doesn’t it? Well, its owner is a former psychologist who is into tango. Read her blog, which narrates re-doing the space with her husband, here.

I’ve been there a couple of times since they opened and I really love the interior they’ve put together. It’s a very nice space to hang out and the staff is super.

The could use a little work on their espresso drinks, but the brewed coffee was pretty good. I’m the upstairs room is open — that’s a great place to look out the windows and see the old buildings of Edgewood.

Hi Cliff, thanks for the mention about Danneman’s. But I need to give you the right scoop on it. My friend Joe Stewardson owns the whole building on the corner or Edgewood and Boulevard that previously was Javaology, Corner Tavern and Cafe Circa. When Javaology closed, Joe met up with Kate Pedrick and decided to partner with Kate to open it back up as a coffee shop theymselves.

Grant Henry is also a good friend of mine and a long time friend of Joe’s. Grant and I decided the decor had to change along with the new direction the coffee shop was taking as Danneman’s coffee in the Old Fourth Ward. And so we took it upon ourselves to do a makeover on the place for Joe and Kate. We had a great time and in two weeks we had completely changed it. We had a blast. So Grant is not my husband, although he is very cute, and I don’t own the Danneman’s although I will get free coffee for life, and I am a former psychologist, now realestate developer, designer, and I do dance Tango as does Joe who does actually own the building. No wonder there was some confusion!

Ohhh. Whoops. Grant is married to Hollis Gillespie, right? And they are into flamenco, not tango, right?

  4. kate pedrick Says:

    Yes, that’s correct! :-)

  5. Grant Henry Says:

    Cliff.
Have you ever read Hollis’s column?
    Ja ja ja ja j
    I’m into Mexican Sausage,
not the Clam of the Bitch!
We must do coffee @ Danneman’s.
    When?

any word on why javaology closed? i’m glad the space is continuing as a cafe, and the upstairs was always so beautiful. if anyone knows, that’d be great.
