Havana Sandwich Shop closed by fire

October 6th, 2008 by Cliff Bostock in News, Restaurants

Here’s some bad news for fans of the Havana Sandwich Shop on Buford Highway at North Druid Hills. Fire completely gutted the 32-year-old restaurant last night. The owner is blaming arson.

WSB-TV has the story and a slide show here.

Coincidentally, a friend mentioned eating there just a few days ago, which precipitated a wave of nostalgia. I used to go to the restaurant regularly during a brief marriage to a Cuban woman. At the time, it was about the only place in Atlanta you could get decent Cuban food.  Unfortunately, this fire follows the recent closing of Kool Korner, whose Cuban sandwich many regarded as the city’s best.

I ate there on Saturaday and have been a customer for 4 years. This is a sad day. It was my wife’s favorite place. I pray that they are able and willing to reopen.

What a sad day! I loved that place. They had the best Cubans in Atlanta. I hope if it is arson, the culprits are caught. What an Atlanta icon. Havana Shop will be greatly missed by my taste buds!

The owner of the Buford Hwy location opened a Havana Sandwich in the old Long John Silvers in Canton, Georgia last month. Apparently she lives in Canton. Her and her son are running the place. So if you feel like driving to the Northern Burbs come on up to Canton to reunite with your cuban taste buds.
