Omnivore - Recession-busting food

Recession-busting food on Buford Highway.

My friend Rose D’Agostino and I lunched Saturday at Quoc Huong (5150 Buford Hwy., 770-936-0605). This tiny Vietnamese cafe has received a lot of buzz on Yelp and Atlanta Cuisine. I’ve been several times before.

The big attraction here for most people is the sandwiches, banh mi, a recession-busting deal if ever there was one. Each over-stuffed, 8-inch baguette costs $2 or $2.50.

Rose ordered this one filled with barbecued pork, while I ordered one with pate and sliced pork.

What makes the banh mi here better than elsewhere? I think it’s the quality of the fresh, crunchy baguette and the generous stuffing.

Quoc Huong also serves noodle and rice dishes. We ordered a bowl of bun —noodles with pork, spring roll and shrimp— and a salted-plum soda each. The total? About $14.
