New pizza chain starts here

December 29th, 2008 by Cliff Bostock in Restaurants

The co-founder of Moe’s Southwest Grill is getting into the pizza business. The first Maddio’s Pizza Joint opens here on Jan. 1:

Moe’s Southwest Grill co-founder Matt Andrew, along with partner Tony Lewis, is opening a new made-to-order pizza concept called Maddio’s Pizza Joint in Atlanta on January 1 at 3027 North Druid Hills Road.

Andrews is billing Maddio’s Pizza Joint as “New Italian” pizza joint. Customers will be greeted by a pizza maker who offers a choice of dough, sauce, and more than 45 toppings.

There’s no word yet whether the staff will shriek at you in Italian when you walk through the door.

I wish them all the best, but I cringed at the phrase “made-to-order pizza concept.”

Why can’t people speak English instead of Marketingese?

“Honey, where do you want to eat dinner tonight?”

“There’s a new made-to-order pizza concept I want to try.”

    “Sounds yummy.”

I noticed this place the other day. Anyone know what happened to the Mama Fu’s the pizza joint is replacing? There one day, gone another.

I am wondering what makes this place different than say, a Fellini’s.

    sounds awful

Another Raving Blands “concept”? What ever happened to RESTAURANTS? I eat food, not concepts. I’m already biased against a pizza concept.

Good zinger, Cliff! Happy New Year to ye…

EVERYONE please support the independant restaurants! They need us the most.

    i miss mama fu’s

i think fu was suppose to be “pho” ahaha

Thankfully I go to pizzeria’s that seem to already have the “concept” of a made-to-order pizza down pat. Fortunato’s, Bella’s, Corner Pizza and Fellini’s (among others) are all excellent local pizzeria’s that deserve patronage.

I can see it now. Benvenuto a Maddio’s! Ugh.

  8. Matt Says:

I might try it once; none of the Raving Brands concepts have ever showed me much, and Moe’s hasn’t gotten any more flavorful since getting sold-off.

Mama Fu’s was another concept with awful food. They seemed to mimic Doc Chey’s which in my opinion was far more edible.

I love pizza options, but I am not holding much hope for this ‘concept’.

I went to the Friends and Family VIP Party there the other day and the food was unbelievable. It was probably the best pizza I’ve ever had here in Atlanta.

However, I did hear from one of the managers that they are opening on January 2nd and giving the crew the day off on the 1st. I’ll surely be there on the 2nd…the Chicken Salad is fantastic.

Is James friends w/ the owners/managers?

Obviously the above sqaubbaling was done by competitors and the Maddio’s PR people alike.
And I noticed these blogs were done before it even opened. A little harsh ay? Trying to destroy a place before you try it (I’m guessing Shorty’s folks are all over this)? Though come on the “best pizza” in town already- a little much on both ends?

Well I put the mud slinging behind me and went to check it out for myself. I went in this afternoon when the place was in a lull. First thing I noticed was the amazing decor. They really went to a lot of trouble to transform this place from an Asian Noodle house to what looks to me like a pretty charming Pizzeria–even if it’s a little too charming for the area.
The service was really good. FORTUNATELY for all of us nobody yells WELCOME TO MADDIO’S at you!!! In fact my “pizza maker” was friendly and helped me through the line. As I’ve read about this place on blogs and online reviews the Buffalo Chicken Pizza is supposed to be great. So I tried it. Well to my surprise it was really really good. I read that it was as good as California Pizza Kitchens Chicken Pizza. Well I’m not sure about that just yet, however at under 7 bucks it’s probably a better deal.
Anyway I only had one item and it was good. I guess the moral of the story is be wary of people with and agenda like the bloggers above (and I mean both sides). Because last time I checked you can’t review a restaurant thats not open?? O ya, yes you can.
    -My humble opinion.
