Serpas opens

January 26th, 2009 by Cliff Bostock in Restaurants

We dined at Serpas last night. The restaurant, which just opened a few days ago, is in the Studioplex loft development in the Old Fourth Ward. It follows the still-kicking trend of locating restaurants in warehouse-style settings. There’s lots of old brick and orange, including an enormous photo mural of flowers we decided was probably apple blossoms.

The “true food,” as Scott Serpas calls his cooking, was mainly good. We sampled this dish of “crab toast,” an interesting re-do of the lately ubiquitous crab cake. Wayne always says his favorite vegetable is toast points, so he especially liked it. Generally, the menu is simple, with no razzle-dazzle and weirdness. Then again, a short rib topped with a blend of cottage cheese and horseradish did border on weird.

I’ll have more to say in my next Grazing column.

How exciting that this is now open.

In case it is helpful as you prepare the main column: According to the restaurant’s website (http://serpasrestaurant.com/about.html), there is “an expansive wall mural of a cotton blossom that pays homage to the building’s heritage.” I haven’t been there to see if there are multiple flower murals, but perhaps this is what you thought was “probably apple blossoms.”

If you’re referring to the picture on the website, that’s cotton, not apples. Where y’all from, Cliff?

    Thanks for the floral correction!

I agree, foodieman, that the industrial warehouse look is growing stale, but the space is very attractive.

How many times do we see this in in an Atlanta food blog? Foodieman with a cranky, negative post… eh been there done that.

Oh, but it’s what he does! Without his poor syntax and grammar, where would we be? ;)

  8. foodieman Says:

didnt mean to make negative statements, just pointing out obvious observations. come on, have we not seen the UP LIGHTING everywhere? not putting it down, just saying..

i wasnt aware that perfect grammar was needed in order to post comments. If that is the case i will pull out my trusty ol’ HARBRACE HANDBOOK.

that being done said, I am glad that a restaurant like Serpas has come into the naaaaaaborhood.
