St Simons — another suburb of Atlanta?

February 11th, 2009 by Cliff Bostock in Best Of, Restaurants

One day we will live in a world that has learned to remedy, um, voting problems in “best of” lists. For now, though, we must live with the fact that participants in OpenTable.com’s “Diners’ Choice” ratings have decided that the second-best restaurant in Atlanta is … Halyards of St. Simons Island! It is also the best coastal Georgia restaurant! Which is quite an accomplishment since it also serves … the best seafood in Atlanta!

In fairness, Open Table calls its ratings report a “beta” version and it’s not clear whether the Atlanta restaurants are rated along with other Georgia restaurants. Whatever, I am quite sure the Melting Pot in Duluth is not the sixth-best restaurant in the Atlanta area.

Awesome. I love Halyard’s. It’s one of my favorite restaurants on the island.

I’m sticking with the calamari tacos at Bubba Garcias. They’re tasty!

What is truly mindblowing about this is that enough people have even been there to vote for it. If i was to ask 10 people in my office if they have been to St. Simons in the last 5 years maybe one would say yes and it would be me (wedding). The melting pot thing is just pathetic.

I’m pretty sure Open Table’s rankings are not based on a straight vote of “What do you think is the best overall restaurant in Atlanta” or anything like that. I think it’s an average of rankings of people who have dined there, so 5 diners giving an average rating of 4.1 stars would be a higher ranking than 50 diners with an average of 4.0 stars (I assume there is a minimum number of diners). Diners usually rate restaurants relative to other restaurants they know, so in areas where there is lower density of high quality restaurants (Duluth, St. Simons, etc), ratings will be higher than if the same restaurant was in, say midtown Atlanta.
