Grazing: First Look: Spoon East Atlanta

“Excuse me while I go to the restroom,” I told Wayne.
“Again?” he replied.
It was my third visit during our meal at Spoon (749 Moreland Ave., 404-624-4713) in East Atlanta. This Thai restaurant has been opened by the same people who operate Spoon on Marietta Street in West Atlanta.
My continual visits to the bathroom had nothing to do with the usual reasons. I was already weeping and sneezing 24 hours a day because of pine pollen. But Spoon’s very spicy food had caused my sinuses to evacuate and my eyes to water even more. I had to run to the bathroom repeatedly to blow my nose with the intensity of a trumpet solo.
Honestly, I love hot food and I wince when I hear diners whining to servers that they don’t eat spicy. (“Then, why are you here?” would be the appropriate response.) But this Spoon, like the original, challenges my own tolerance. You have three choices – “medium spicy,” “hot” and “Thai hot” – and even the medium is capable of causing your mouth to sizzle.

cliff,
if you think Spoon makes it hot, don’t even consider eating L.A. thai…

Heard all the hype and was excited to try it on the 2nd opening day, however was disappointed by the high price and small portion size, I left hungry after an appetizer and stir fry. Unfortunatley our server didn’t engage any conversation on the menu or if this was our first visit, however the rest of the staff was extremely friendly. Will stick to Thai East Atlanta, better value and comparable taste.

I’ve been a loyal once every week customer to little bangkok on Cheshire Bridge for several years. Maybe I need stray off the range.

I’ve been a weeekly faithful to Little Bangkok on Chesire Bridge for years. Maybe it’s time to give Spoon a shot.

I love Little Bangkok, too, Tyree. I have no plans to give it up. They do some specials unique in the city.

I do agree with EN about the high prices and small portions. And I think they cut back on the heat since your article Cliff. The medium spicey had very little heat to the Massamum and Basil Stir-Fry that we ordered. I’ll go back when I don’t want to leave the neighborhood, but they reigns of Thai restaurants still belong to Little Bangkok.

we went last weekend for dinner. potstickers (good, but room temperature) and chicken coconut soup (ok) for appetizers, green curry and red curry for entrees. red curry was good but green curry was mostly sauce: a few veggies and 3 or 4 small pieces of chicken. i too agree with the portions comments and as for spiciness, we order both curries “hot” and they were maybe medium in my book. i guess one has to order “thai hot” to get it spicy. the food was tasty but i’m not sure i’d go back without a gift certificate. i’d rather pay a little more for tamarind or buy a plane ticket and go to Sripraphai in queens.
