Talking Head: The road goes on forever and the party never ends

Although it’s less than a week after the start of summer, it seems like we’re deep into the heart of it now. No need to take off the party hats, except to wipe the sweat from your brow.
Taco Mac continues celebrating its 30th anniversary, as well as the beginning of summer, with the release last week of Red Brick Solstice Roggenbock from Atlanta Brewing Company. According to Taco Mac beverage manager Fred Crudder, it’s similar to the Helles Bock but with the addition of rye malt, which should add some spiciness and a grainy bite. Check your local outlet to see if it has Solstice on tap.
The Brick Store Pub’s 12th anniversary celebration continues this week, with special kegs each night, leading up to Saturday’s shindig featuring a new beer every hour and probably some silly behavior in the final hours. Be sure to ask your server for tap list updates if you go this week, since there are a number of excellent choices beyond the featured beer, including New Belgium La Folie and De Ranke Noir.
If you don’t have plans for the 4th of July yet, why not head for the boardwalk? You won’t actually have to go to the beach, only as far as Steinbeck’s in Oakhurst, where they’ll be celebrating America from 2-6 p.m. with a hot-dog-eating contest, Coney Island beers, live music, and a circus side show by Psycho Tattoo’s own Capt. Stab-Tuggo. Afterwards, you can stroll over to Decatur to catch the fireworks.
Taco Mac’s July 26th beer dinner at the Lindbergh location will celebrate that iconic summer activity, the picnic. Executive Chef Matt Deckard has worked up a six-course repast of warm-weather flavors, and Crudder has paired each with a summery malt beverage, including one mystery beer. Check out www.taco-mac.com and click “beer dinners” for the full menu. The cost is $50, not including tax and tip.
Finally, it’s still a couple of months away, but tickets are on sale now for the sixth annual German Bierfest in Woodruff Park on Aug. 29, sponsored by the German-American Chamber of Commerce South. The festival will feature more than 30 German beers to sample, along with music and German culture. Tickets are $30 in advance, $35 at the gate, but if you purchase by July 4, you’ll receive an additional $5 off the price. Check out www.germanbierfest.com for all the details.
